It was organized by the Institude of Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw. The Symposium was followed by the 1st Workshop of the EARSeL Special Interest Group on Geological Applications, dedicated to Geohazards with emphasis on lowland hazards. This volume contains the lasted research achievements of the EARSeL network, presented at the symposium under the general theme "New Developments and Challenges in Remote Sensing". The balance has been sought between papers covering data processing techniques and those describing practical applications. The technical papers inclued in this volume cover the following topics: Image Processing Techniques, Data Fusion, Radar Remote Sensing, 3D Remote Sensing, while the more practical papers include applications in the fields of Agriculture, Land Use Cover, Oceans and Coastal Zones, Water and Atmosphere, Environmental Applications, Imaging Spectroscopy, Land Degradation and UNESCO World Heritage. The papers are printed in black and white, and are also found in full on the accompanying CD-ROM, including all full-colour illustrations. From the different contributions made during this symposium it becomes clear that, after a set of new sensors like Envisat, Ikonos, Quickbird, ASTER, MODIS ... became operational, now also the applications have reached the operational stage. The development of adapted methodologies to this new generation of sensors needs a couple of years before entering the application stage. It is also clear that Very High Resolution data has entered definitively the remote sensing applications "forum", with the emphasis on studies dealing with resolutions adapted to new application areas, urban structures for example, something which was not possible in the past since the resolutions were not appropriate. Many contributions illustrate the use of sensors with a better and finer spectral resolution. Environmental protection, a new field of application was also the theme of several contributions. It must be started, nevertheless, that for the moment radar images remain the inherent tool for certain applications and Landsat TM and ETM+ for optical remote sensing, remain the "work horses". The recent difficulties with the Landcast sensor, however, may change this part of the "remote sensing landscape". But other sensors with others and sometimes more possibilities are ready to take over. Wo=ith new strategies for Earth observation being formulated, one may conclude that the remote sensing community really is in transition.
