This workshop was co-organized by Prof. Michael Chapman of the Department of Surveying Engineering of The University of Calgary and the participation of over 100 registrants, mostly from non-surveying backgrounds, suggests it was a successful venture. At the Photogrammetry Committee meetings of the Canadian Institute of Surveying and Mapping, the ideas of workshops, seminars and lecture notes in digital mapping and land information have been discussed for over two years. The objectives have always been in terms of formalizing the new concepts, introducing the related techniques, reviewing the needs and requirements of land information users with maximum objectivity considering the available information and computer technology. Digital mapping is characterized by the transition from semi-manual analog operations to automated digital procedures. A number of new ideas and related strategies are necessary for the traditional map maker to adapt to the new demands of digital mapping. For topographical mapping applications, for example, the positional and cartographic accuracies should be improving with the digital mapping methodology. Land information, in the generic sense, includes all the geographical and related information pertaining to the land and its resources. Digital mapping products are therefore components of land information systems. This perspective is somewhat new in surveying and consequently the concepts and their applications need to be introduced with appropriate examples to a surveying audience. However, with some geographical and computer science preparation, these ideas are much easier to understand. Note de contenu : 1 - Digital mapping
