Because the orbit selected for ERS-1 is very similar to the orbit of the US SEASAT satellite, a large part of the study deals with the processing of laser range and altimeter height measurements of that satellite. The various numerical experiments with these data give a clear indication of what levels of accuracy may be achieved in the ERS-1 mission.
The report starts with a survey of the general orbit characteristics of the SEASAT and ERS~1 satellites, the ground track patterns and the ground systems tracking coverage. It continues with a discussion about earth gravity field models, radial orbit perturbations due to specific terms of these models and the concept of super-tailored gravity models. Six 3-day laser range data arcs of SEASAT were selected and accurate reference orbits have been computed. These orbits serve as the thruth model to which orbits computed with three super-tailored gravity models and orbits computed from a combination of laser and altimeter measurements are compared. In the gravity model tuning experiment only 21 or 59 coefficients of an existing gravity model have been adjusted, using laser data only or a combination of laser range and altimeter height measurements. In the alternative tracking concept numerical experiment it was assumed that the SEASAT orbit was computed from a combination of laser tracking data from a single ground system and global altimeter height measurements or altimeter cross-over differences. Subsequently, some techniques are discussed which may be applied to process altimeter measurements for the determination of regional mean sea surfaces, the measurement of smallscale features of the geoid and the detection of mesoscale temporal variabilities of the sea surface. Some results of processing SEASAT altimeter measurements are given. Finally, the main conclusions of the investigations presented in this report are summarized and some recommendations for further studies are formulated.Numéro de notice : 18217 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE/POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Monographie Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=55354 Exemplaires(1)
