The basic properties of observations of different kinds and the way in which they are related to the points and the means of observations are investigated. These relations are described in an uniform data structure, in which graph theory is used as a tool. The structure of the data is used in two ways. The data structure is closely connected with the structure of the program for the adjustment and the structure of the matrices which take part in the adjustment. The investigation has led to that most operations are carried through with increased efficiency by the computer. The inverse of relevant parts of the normal equations are computed without approximations. The applications are diverse, but the emphasis has been put on the adjustment of large, high precision aerial blocks with the aid of three-dimensional geodesy and the adjustment of close-range industrial projects where geometrical constraints are applied to the points.
