Format : 21 x 30 cm Note générale : bibliographie Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : (auteur) Cartographic representations are nowadays more and more explored but current online cartographic tools lack graphic and sophisticated tools to make expressive, original and better maps. One important aspect for us is to favor users‟ creativity in proposing them ways to effectively make customized maps adapted to their needs, preferences and intention. We focus on the notion of cartographic style: our long-term purpose consists in formalizing and implementing cartographic styles in cartographic tools to favor users‟ creativity during map design process. At this step of the research, we consider existing cartographic styles, traditional ones coming from NMAs, more creative ones coming from old maps, Internet, etc., but also future cartographic styles, coming from other domains (art, image, design, etc.). Our objective is not to list in an exhaustive way all possible cartographic styles, but to provide approaches to highlight visual characteristics to define or to build cartographic styles. These approaches allow us to discuss on the building of a model of a cartographic style. Existing design choices, such as favored base maps, transparency levels of the displayed layers, scale visualization, have been studied from mixed representations in use. They have also been faced to the aim of the related applications, the user’s tasks (data visualization and interaction) and their resulting uses in order to define general trends about mixed representations. [Termes IGN] style cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) As anyone can become a mapmaker thanks to the profusion of cartographic tools and GIS, it is important now to help users making better maps. This paper aims at proposing a model to assist users designing correct and satisfactory legends. We use dialogue techniques in order to support the cartographic expertise, to manage user's preferences, and to support negotiations between the user and the system. Our dialogue engine is based on design strategies, various ways to retrieve the user's constraints, with the help of map samples or of painters' palettes. They aim at proposing several suitable legends according to constraints: Constraint Satisfaction Problem methods are used to solve this problem. Those intermediary legends are evaluated and proposed to the user, which can select the most satisfactory of them, respecting the cartographic rules or not. Refinements tools are provided to the user to improve again his legend, offering him a wider degree of creativity. At the end, the final legend is designed, when all themes are completed and the user is satisfied. A prototype is also presented. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Map making includes many tasks that can not be entirely formalized if we include in that creation not only the drawing but also the good transmission of information. In order to improve the message of a map, we propose a process that would help a map designer to make choices on the display. This process has been enclosed in three main Web services that interpret user-oriented specifications into a relevant selection of data and definition of styles to draw a map that meets these specifications. The initial service is a map specifications service. It aims at completing from the context, the abstract definition of a map: we mean the geographical area, the scale, the type of map, the themes to display and other abstract characteristics. The user needs assistance to build these formal specifications, indeed the notions of map model, data relations, or reading level which are specific terms in cartography are not instinctive. This first service aims at providing this assistance. The second service aims at interpreting the formal abstract specification of a map yielded by the previous service into data selection and styles definition. We would like to propose a legend that respects cartographic rules within the context of the initial map description. In that objective, we constitute a base of cartographic knowledge readable by computer systems. We rely on the literature as well as on existing maps to propose map templates. Though, predefined layers might not always be accurate enough to manage the constraints from the user specifications. To propose new legends or to improve existing ones, we have to encode in an operational model, principles of cartographic theory, definition of standard maps and researches. The third service that we describe aims at evaluating the map once displayed. Legibility problems, like unexpected interactions between graphical signs, may occur due to the data. The submitted evaluation module mainly focuses on the colour contrasts. An example of a scenario from a user's specifications to the proposal of a final map is described and discussed.
