[Termes IGN] signal GPSRésumé : (Auteur) In the june 1999 issue of Geoinformatics, the benefits of Global Positioning System (GPS) signal modernization to the civil GPS community were discussed. With the decision of the European Union (EU) in march this year to develop its own satellite navigation system, Galileo, and have this system operational by 2008, this may be a good opportunity to look again at the modernized GPS and Galileo signals. [Termes IGN] image QuickbirdRésumé : (Auteur) Since my overview article on commercial highresolution space imagery was published in Geoinformatics oneandahalf years ago, there have been quite a number of developments in this sector. Another highresolution satellite, QuickBird, has been launched successfully to add to IKONOS and EROSA1 All three satellites are now fully operational, so the longheralded competition between the commercial providers of highresolution space imagery is at last taking place. However, this is now bringing to the fore a number of questions about the size and the viability of this particular market and about its continuity. Whatever the answers to these questions, looking to the future, interest within the commercial sector is now being focused on the potential of another rather different technology and market. On the technology side, this would involve the introduction of constellations of small satellites that can produce multispectral. imagery, but of a rather lower ground resolution and providing wider coverage and more frequent revisit times than those of the current highresolution satellites. With regard to the market, the main target area for the resulting imagery would be agriculture. This possibility has been discussed for quite some time, but now circumstances have arisen where it might actually become a reality.
