That information is often usefull for numerous departments, groups and individuals within the same organization. This includes the integration of various scales, orthophotos, digital terrain models and other thematic cartographic products. the design and management of a regional cartographic catalogue that is web based provides a quick and effective means for integrating data and visualizing information through the organization and accross geographical areas. Insiel, Finsiel Group - Telecom Italy has developped an application and service for the region Friuli-Venezia Giulia that meets this need. Unless they are planimetric and for local use, they will also involve degrees of selectivity and generalisation. Data products can be created from maps or vice versa. The data-centric approach has many advantages, and is increasingly being realised. This has led a distinction between model generalisation - appropriate to the wide range of rendering and analysis tasks the data is designed to support - and cartographic generalisation, which focuses on the specific task of producing maps to particular cartographic specifications. The article gives an insight into Mapping Agencies Generalisation NETwork (MAGNET), which has a goal to provide a platform in which users could influence product directions and contribute expertise and research, based on the facts that generalisation is a key interest of the user community and that the current technology and platform offer a very promising way ahead.
