[Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (Auteur) Aerial photographs are often used in forestry for stand mapping and spatio-temporal landscape dynamics analysis with management perspective. They are preferred to satellite imagery because they are available in time series and are high-resotufion data, more easily accessible to forest managers. Up to now aerial photographs have been analysed by photo-interpreters. This is a time-consuming, laborious, expensive task and repticability of the method depends on the operator. The Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL and the Laboratoire de Production Microtechnique-EPFL are working on aerial photograph analysis automation with the aim to develop a software detecting forest outlines and recognising single-tree location and size on digitised aerial photographs. Numerous applications appear possible : calculating forest cover percentage, monitoring spatio-temporal changes of forest areas or the evolution of single tree radius classes. We explain how the software DENDROS works, and present an application in the Jura Mountains in Switzerland. [Termes IGN] risque naturelRésumé : (Auteur) In a fast changing era, present and future oriented hazard management strategies should be internally capable to cope with larger aims of technological, social and economic dimensions. Within this context, technological, economic, legal and social management responses, in order to face the challenges of a dynamic environment, should incorporate both "non-structural" and "structural" mechanisms as components of an integrated policy that links environment to growth. [Termes IGN] TESRésumé : (Auteur) Asia is an area where currently there is a huge activity in terms of building and launching satellites with a high-resotution imaging capabitity. Already six high-resolution satellites have been built in Asiatic countries and are operational, including two each from Israel, India and Japan. Another high-resotution satellite belonging to Taiwan is due to be launched within the next month or so. A further five are scheduled to be launched within the period 2004-2005 and still more are planned to be orbited during the rest of the decade. As will be seen, the vast majority of these satellites are being launched with national security considerations in mind. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) eCognition 4.0 is an object oriented image analysis software that is used to segment and classify several types of images. It represents a new era in image analysis due to its object-oriented approach for the segmentation and classification of satellite images, aerial photographs and other imagery. Images are segmented and classed quickly using eCognition's unique object oriented approach and high level of flexibility for controlling functionality and parameterization processes. The following is a review of eCognition, developed and distributed by Definiens Imaging GmbH. [Termes IGN] surface du solRésumé : (Auteur) Over the last few decades, science has often presented us with detailed information at small points. We might know a lot about some experimental plots on two soil types in a country or a lot about water quality at the mouth of two large rivers. Today we are often asked the question "what is the status of X in all the places between those points?" or "which parts of a river basin are causing our peaks of chemical X in our monitoring program?" The tools described here not only have a wide application within a discipline such as soil science or forestry but have applications across a wide range of disciplines. Producing detailed soil capability maps for precision farming or environmental risk maps for environmental impact assessments are two other areas these tools are applicable. We are only beginning to visualize and experience how to use them to get a job done quicker, cheaper and more accurate.
