Geographic Information Systems enable the handling of various data, which have to be matched prior to their use. This paper presents a geometric matching algorithm for polygonal surfaces. Our thought process is to handle the surface in itself without focusing on the information about its contour. This algorithm is based on a mathematical distance between polygons. This distance makes it possible to compute two thresholds and a matching table that is defined as a list of polygons from one data set that may be matched to polygons of the other data set. The thresholds are considered as the tuning parameters of this algorithm. They are used to filter the matching table in order to eliminate non-relevant links to produce the matching. The matching process takes into account various cardinality such as 1:1 or 1:n or n:l. Based on the matching table, a quality map of a controlled data set has been produced. This quality assessment is based on a similar measurement of the mathematical distance between polygons. This algorithm has been tested and validated on various data sets, including the land-use layer of French Cartographic Database BDCarto® and Corine Land-Cover Database, or buildings from the French Topographic database BDTopo® and the French Cadaster. This paper presents also the results of these tests. This fundamental information is highly structured in most geographical information systems, in which complex concepts like topology can be implemented. This paper describes a study on precision and resolution of vector data. Precision and resolution can be defined easily for raster data or even for classical paper maps. Their definition for digital vector data is presented as a consequence of the corresponding definitions for classical paper maps and as a result of production processes and human perception. Trying to make precision and resolution compatible is then presented as an optimisation issue for geographical databases. A tool providing a simple solution is proposed as well as a classification of the problems that are raised. [Termes IGN] qualité des metadonnéesRésumé : (auteur) CERCO (Comite Europeen des Responsables de la Cartographie Officielle) gathers participants from European National Mapping Agencies. It has created several working groups for exchanging information and for discussing geographical information issues. One of them, the Working Group on Quality was created in September 1997 and is working on three main subjects: "Quality management and ISO 9000", "Data quality issues" and "Standards". This paper presents elements which have been given to the questions raised up to now and emphasizes common and different points of view of the National Map Agencies. The first subject consists of analysing the opportunity to implement ISO 9000 for National Map Agencies. A questionnaire has been written and this paper presents the results. The second subject aims to share experience about geographical data quality during the entire life cycle of a product such as cadastre, topographic products or orthophotography. A lot of topics raised: methodologies for identifying users requirements or processes to evaluate the fitness for use. The point is to identify relevant questions among all these issues. The third subject concerns experience in applying the two CEN/TC 287 standards: Metadata and Quality. Metadata standards give very useful common structures for geographical dataset description. This group decided to focus on a subset of the most comprehensive standards at a level named "core-metadata", presented in this paper.
