As a result, several issues related to geographic data modelling and GIS content are arising. Besides, the need for generalisation capabilities in GIS activities is becoming more and more important, so that these representational needs of generalisation become needs of GIS systems themselves. This paper attempts to illustrate some of these needs while proposing some preliminary conclusions ans solutions.
