[Termes IGN] station DORISRésumé : (Auteur) All space-geodetic techniques are now organized as separate services of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), supporting the first pilot project “Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS)”. The International DORIS (Détermination d’Orbite et Radiopositionnement Intégrés par Satellite) Service (IDS) was created in mid-2003 to organize a DORIS contribution to this project and to foster a larger international cooperation on this topic. The goal of this paper is to summarize the key steps that were taken to create this structure and to present its current organization and recent results. At present, more than 50 groups from 35 different countries participate in the IDS at various levels, including 43 groups hosting DORIS stations in 32 countries all around the globe. Four Analysis Centres (ACs) provide results, such as estimates of weekly or monthly station coordinates, geocentre variations or Earth polar motion, that will soon be used to generate IDS-combined products for geodesy and geodynamics. As a first test, a preliminary combination was performed for all the 2004 data from these four ACs. Three of them show RMS of weighted station residuals with respect to this combination solution between 1 and 2 cm. The main topic under investigation is a discrepancy in the scale factor of the terrestrial reference frame (TRF) to map the individual solutions into the combination solution, which reaches 6 cm (multiplying the unit-less scale factor by the Earth radius to get convert scale to millimetre in vertical at the Earth’s surface). Finally, foreseen improvements of the DORIS technology are discussed as well as future improvements concerning the service organization itself and the accuracy and reliability of its scientific products. [Termes IGN] troposphèreRésumé : (auteur) We have processed all available DORIS data from all available satellites, except Jason-1 over the past 10 years (from January 1993 to April 2003). Weekly solutions have been produced for stations positions coordinates, geocenter motion and scale factor stability. We present here accuracy presently achievable for all types of potential geodetic products. Typically weekly stations positions can be derived with a repeatability of 1.0–1.5 cm using data from 5 satellites simultaneously, showing the significant improvement in precision that has been gained recently using the additional new DORIS satellites. As an example, we show how such new results can detect displacement from large magnitude earthquakes, such as the 2003 Denali fault earthquake in Alaska. Displacements of −5 cm in latitude and +2 cm in longitude were easily detected using the DORIS data and are confirmed by recent GPS determination. The terrestrial reference frame was also well be monitored with DORIS during this 10-year period. Other geodetic products, such as tropospheric corrections for atmospheric studies are also analyzed. Finally, we discuss here the possible advantages and weaknesses of the DORIS system as additional geodetic tool, in conjunction with the already existing GPS, VLBI and SLR services, to participate in an Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). [Termes IGN] positionnement par DORISRésumé : (auteur) The DORIS system was initially developed for precise orbit determination and precise positioning on the Earth. In continuation of the DORIS Pilot Experiment initiated in 1999, the International DORIS Service (IDS) officially started on July 1, 2003 as an IAG Service after an official acceptance from the IAG Executive Committee at the IUGG General Assembly in Sapporo, Japan. Following this decision, the IERS Directing board accepted the DORIS Service as a new IERS external service. Six satellites carrying DORIS receivers are currently in orbit, permanently observed by 56 well-distributed tracking stations. Among these, three satellites (Jason-1, ENVISAT and SPOT5) are equipped with the new generation of DORIS receivers and were launched between December 2001 and May 2002. The DORIS receivers on these three spacecraft include a navigation function, called DIODE. The permanent tracking network has been constantly improved and specific campaigns of observations have been conducted in Wettzell, Gads and in Antarctica. Recent DORIS performances for precise positioning were improved by this large increase in the satellite constellation, leading to almost 1 cm precision for weekly station coordinates. Significant improvements were also obtained in Polar Motion estimations, leading to 1.0–1.5 mas daily results. In 2003 and 2004, several steps were taken to improve the operations of the IDS, as well as its international cooperation, by organizing several specific analysis campaigns. The International DORIS Service has now started its scientific activity on a routine basis for the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) and the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). Since then, 3 new DORIS satellites have been launched carrying improved Doppler receivers. In addition, the DORIS tracking network has also been steadily improved.
