[Termes IGN] UltraCamRésumé : (Auteur) Within the paper a comparative quantification of the spatial image resolution for large-format digital airborne cameras will be presented. For this purpose, imagery of the Leica ADS40, the Intergraph Z/I-imaging DMC and the Vexcel UltraCamD were examined. The respective spatial resolutions are represented by means of the point spread function, which can be measured easily and reliably at image edges. Thus, images of test patterns like a Siemens star were used. In addition to the evaluation of the original images as they are provided by the camera systems, the potential benefit of a resolution improvement by image restoration is demonstrated. Therefore, a linear restoring finite impulse response filter is applied. Usually, colour image acquisition by digital aerial camera systems is realised by combining data from the multi-spectral module with higher resolution panchromatic imagery. The quality of this pan-sharpening process is presented in the final part of the paper. For this purpose, the potential degradation of colour information by this process was quantified for the three tested camera systems in addition to the resolution measurements. [Termes IGN] pouvoir de résolution géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The present article reports the results of an extensive empirical evaluation of spatial resolution of a digital large format Intergraph DMC sensor. The parameters of the study were flight direction, ground sample distance (GSD) and the distance from the image center. The key finding of the study was that the resolution of the DMC panchromatic large-format image was clearly dependent on the distance from the image center. One reason for this behavior is that the DMC large-format image is composed of four oblique images; the resolution of the oblique images is reduced towards the image border due to the scale reduction and projective distortion. From the image pixel size of 12 um of DMC, a nominal resolving power value (RP) 84 lines/mm can be derived. Maximal resolution reduction factors in the image comers, caused by the image tilt, were 1.6 in the cross-flight direction and 1.4 in the flight direction. The distance from the image center did not appear to affect the resolution of the low-resolution multi-spectral images looking towards nadir. The observed MTFs indicated attractive behavior. The A WAR values of the panchromatic images were between 61 and 71 lines/mm, which is 1.2-1.4 times the nominal RP-value. Other important findings were the effects of GSD and flight direction on the resolution; these properties evidently characterize the behavior of the entire photogrammetric system tested. The image restoration by a linear restoring finite impulse response filter provided a constant resolution improvement factor of 1.4. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) We summarize the procedures and preliminary conclusions from an inter-institutional project group evaluating the feasibility (economically and practically) for introducing digital aerial imagery into the work flow used in connection with maintenance of a national map database. Not surprisingly, the main conclusion is that "it depends...": there are in many cases good technical reasons for switching, but the final decision must depend heavily on the price level of the digital vs. the analogue imagery. In a few years time we expect that digital imagery will be much more widespread than analogue. [Termes IGN] UltraCamRésumé : (Auteur) The IGN digital camera project was set up in the early 90's and the first research surveys were carried out in 1996. The digital camera was first used in production in 2000 when the DMC and ADS40 systems appeared on the market at the beginning of the 21st century. Since then, two medium format systems (Applanix DSS322 and DiMAC system) and a third large-format system (Vexcel UltraCamD) appeared on the surveying market. Today, IGN's system could appear very underperforming in terms of possible swaths and frame rates compared with the ones offered by large format cameras ; and parts of our electronics have become obsolete. This is the reason why we recently reanalyzed the needs of IGN in term of digital imagery and confronted them to the main characteristics and capabilities of the different existing commercial systems. Considering that Bayer acquisition without a coupled panchromatic acquisition does not allow an image reconstruction of good quality and considering that an acquisition system based on CCD area sensors must be equipped with a Forward Motion Compensation (FMC) able to compensate dozens of pixels, we only focused on the three large-format systems that are : Intergraph's DMC, Vexcel's UltracamD, and Leica Geosystems' ADS40. Each of these three systems has its pros and cons and no one seems to bring an answer to all our needs. [Termes IGN] image aérienneRésumé : (Auteur) With the growing use of digital airborne imagers in daily operational data acquisition and processing the need for the development of guidelines and procedures for quality assurance and quality control is clearly obvious. Several national and international organizations are dealing with those topics, where focus is laid on the calibration, validation and certification of the new sensors. As an example the activities from USGS (United States) and EuroSDR (Europe) are presented within this article. Since both projects are still under current processing, only an overview and snap-shot of the status and preliminary results are given. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Cartographic Institute of Catalonia (ICC) has acquired a DMC digital camera and has performed some first investigations regarding radiometric performance and geometric accuracy potential. In this cooperation with the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP), ETH Zurich various aspects are analysed. The investigations make use of recent test flights near Tortosa, a plane region with varying landcover. For the quantitative analysis of the DMC results, a ground control points and lidar data exist, which have been simultaneously acquired with the DMC images. The first part of the investigations focusses on geometric sensor modeling and aerial triangulation. Preliminary results of ICC have shown that when standard additional parameters, like the 12 Ebner parameters, are used in AT, significant systematic errors remain and each of the 4 subimages that form the virtual panchromatic image has a different pattern of image deformations. In these investigations, we do not perform analysis of additional parameters in order to model these deformations, as this has been done in another ICC work. The results are analysed using GCPs established in the above mentioned testfield, using two different bundle adjustment programs.. Another part of our investigations regarding AT deals with automatic point transfer using a high quality multi-image, multi-primitive matching method developed at IGP, initially for automatic DSM generation. Different aspects like number, distribution and accuracy of the tie points are analysed, as well number of rays per tie point. The second part of the paper focuses on automatic DSM generation. Although digital cameras offer characteristics, like better image quality, that could be used favourably in automated DSM generation, almost all commercial systems employ matching methods with limitations, like no support of multi-image matching. In these investigations, we briefly introduce the above mentioned IGP multi-image matching and present the matching results. Initial results with other digital cameras and images with large forward and side overlap have shown that this matching approach can produce DSMs at least as dense as those produced by airborne laser scanning and almost as accurate, preserving also very well surface discontinuities. The processing and DSM control was performed by IGP using lidar data provided by ICC, while ICC made an independent control of the aerial triangulation using the software programs at ICC. [Termes IGN] qualité géométrique (image)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper describes a geometric evaluation of the photogrammetric workflow resulting from an experimental aerial survey performed using a Leica Airborne Digital Sensor (ADS40) system. Imagery of a 13 km2 study area in the United Kingdom was captured using an ADS40. The study area was flown with the ADS40 at four different altitudes with resulting imagery at ground sampled distances of 15, 20, 25 and 30 cm. Ground points, comprising natural features distributed throughout the study area, were surveyed using GPS methods. In addition, RC30 film imagery and data from a lidar survey conducted using an Optech ALTM 2050 airborne laser scanner was also available for use in validation. The ADS40 imagery of the study area was processed using standard commercial software and a number of tests were conducted to geometrically assess the photogrammetric performance of imagery from the sensor at various stages throughout the photogrammetric workflow. Experiments examined the influence of ground control points (GCPs) in bundle block adjustment and the performance of digital elevation models (DEMs) resulting from the processing of ADS40 imagery. This independent research has permitted a series of initial conclusions to be drawn and preliminary recommendations to be made for optimum deployment of the ADS40 sensor under certain operational conditions. For example, it is shown that, despite advances made in direct positioning and orientation using integrated satellite and inertial surveying, the importing of GCPs into the block adjustment process remains a critical issue influencing the achievable accuracy during photogrammetric measurement.
