We might know a lot about some experimental plots on two soil types in a country or a lot about water quality at the mouth of two large rivers. Today we are often asked the question "what is the status of X in all the places between those points?" or "which parts of a river basin are causing our peaks of chemical X in our monitoring program?" The tools described here not only have a wide application within a discipline such as soil science or forestry but have applications across a wide range of disciplines. Producing detailed soil capability maps for precision farming or environmental risk maps for environmental impact assessments are two other areas these tools are applicable. We are only beginning to visualize and experience how to use them to get a job done quicker, cheaper and more accurate.
