These wetlands are an incredibly diverse and fragile resource from within which some of the countries most enigmatic arch aeologicat finds have been discovered. The project entitled the Monuments at Risk in England's Wetlands or MAREW for short was published by Exeter University in 2002. It summarized that at least 50% of the original extent of lowland peatlands have been lost in the last 50 years, and alongside this an estimated 10,450 wetland monuments have been destroyed or damaged during the same period.
