Mines without laser surveying are now operating at a disadvantage. Soon they will be anachronisms. In 1400 BC, the Egyptians first used surveying to accurately divide land into plots for taxation purposes. At the same time, polished surfaces were being used as reflectors to send messages. Three thousand years on, advances in the field of optics paved the way for many technological leaps, not the least being telescopes and instruments for more precise measurements. During the industrial revolution, the importance of exact boundaries for public utilities brought surveying into prominence. More accurate instruments were developed. Demand increased. Surveying now impacts all aspects of modern life.
