[Termes IGN] masseRésumé : (auteur) As changes in gravity are directly related to mass variability, satellite missions observing the Earth’s time varying gravity field are a unique tool for observing mass transport processes in the Earth system, such as the water cycle, rapid changes in the cryosphere, oceans, and solid Earth processes, on a global scale. The observation of Earth’s gravity field was successfully performed by the GRACE and GOCE satellite missions, and will be continued by the GRACE Follow-On mission. A comprehensive team of European scientists proposed the next-generation gravity field mission MOBILE in response to the European Space Agency (ESA) call for a Core Mission in the frame of Earth Explorer 10 (EE10). MOBILE is based on the innovative observational concept of a high-low tracking formation with micrometer ranging accuracy, complemented by new instrument concepts. Since a high-low tracking mission primarily observes the radial component of gravity-induced orbit perturbations, the error structure is close to isotropic. This geometry significantly reduces artefacts of previous along-track ranging low-low formations (GRACE, GRACE-Follow-On) such as the typical striping patterns. The minimum configuration consists of at least two medium-Earth orbiters (MEOs) at 10000 km altitude or higher, and one low-Earth orbiter (LEO) at 350-400 km. The main instrument is a laser-based distance or distance change measurement system, which is placed at the LEO. The MEOs are equipped either with passive reflectors or transponders. In a numerical closed-loop simulation, it was demonstrated that this minimum configuration is in agreement with the threshold science requirements of 5 mm equivalent water height (EWH) accuracy at 400 km wavelength, and 10 cm EWH at 200 km. MOBILE provides promising potential future perspectives by linking the concept to existing space infrastructure such as Galileo next-generation, as future element of the Copernicus/Sentinel programme, and holds the potential of miniaturization even up to swarm configurations. As such MOBILE can be considered as a precursor and role model for a sustained mass transport observing system from space. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Malaysia and Indonesia have been affected by deforestation caused in great part by the proliferation of oil palm plantations. To survey this loss of forest, several studies have monitored these southeast Asian nations with satellite remote sensing alert systems. The methods used have shown potential for this approach, but they are limited by imagery with coarse spatial resolution, low revisit times, and cloud cover. The objective of this research is to improve near real-time operational deforestation detection by combining three sensors: Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8. We used Change Vector Analysis to detect changes between non-affected forest and images under analysis. The results were validated using 166 plots of undisturbed forest and confirmed deforestation events throughout Sabah Malaysian State, and from 70 points from drone pictures in Sumatra, Indonesia. Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 yielded sufficient results in terms of accuracy (less than 11% of commission and omission error). Sentinel-1 had lower accuracy (14% of commission error and 28% of omission error), probably resulting from geometric distortions and speckle noise. During the high cloud-cover season optical sensors took about twice the time to detect deforestation compared to Sentinel-1 which was not affected by cloud cover. By combining the three sensors, we detected deforestations about 8 days after forest clearing events. Deforestations were only detectable during approximately the first 100 days, before bare soils were often coved by legume crop. Our results indicate that near real-time deforestation detection can reveal most events, but the number of false detections could be improved using a multiple event detection process. Année de publication : 2019 Projets : 1-Pas de projet / Article en page(s) : pp 133 - 141 Note générale : bibliographie Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : (auteur) The main limiting factor for the use of solid wood lies in its highly hydrophilic character which is associated with the loss of its properties after moisture uptake. Therefore for limiting the negative impact of moisture in wooden structures, numerous research have been carried out in order to (i) protect the surface of wood by the addition of varied varnish or protections or to (ii) modify the wooden surfaces structure by the mean of different technologies such as thermal treatments. The former present the disadvantage to protect the wood surfaces for a limited period of time while the later present the disadvantage to reduce the mechanical properties. The aim was investigate how to reduce the hydrophilic character of wood without reducing physical and/mechanical properties. We use dynamic fluorination using F2 gas applied to wood samples (Douglas and silver fir) for reducing the hydrophilic character. The covalent grafting of fluorine atoms on a wood surface was highlighted by Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy and 19F solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. The wood samples acquire a hydrophobic character comparable to that of Polytetrafluoroethylene, thanks to fluorination. The high durability of this treatment was also determined by aging tests under ambient atmosphere and UV irradiation. Moreover, this treatment gives a surface with a hydrophobic character without major structural (morphology, density and colour) and mechanical modifications. Maintaining those properties after fluorination, a dried gas/solid treatment without the use of toxic solvents and high temperatures seems to show a remarkable advantage over other physical chemical wood treatments. [Termes IGN] harmonique sphériqueRésumé : (auteur) Measurements of the spatio-temporal variations of Earth’s gravity field from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission have led to new insights into large spatial mass redistribution at secular, seasonal and subseasonal timescales. GRACE solutions from various processing centres, while adopting different processing strategies, result in rather coherent estimates. However, these solutions also exhibit random as well as systematic errors, with specific spatial patterns in the latter.
In order to dampen the noise and enhance the geophysical signals in the GRACE data, we propose an approach based on a data-driven spatio-temporal filter, namely the Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (M-SSA). M-SSA is a data-adaptive, multivariate, and non-parametric method that simultaneously exploits the spatial and temporal correlations of geophysical fields to extract common modes of variability.
We perform an M-SSA analysis on 13 yr of GRACE spherical harmonics solutions from five different processing centres in a simultaneous setup. We show that the method allows us to extract common modes of variability between solutions, while removing solution-specific spatio-temporal errors that arise from the processing strategies. In particular, the method efficiently filters out the spurious north–south stripes, which are caused in all likelihood by aliasing, due to the imperfect geophysical correction models and low-frequency noise in measurements.
Comparison of the M-SSA GRACE solution with mass concentration (mascons) solutions shows that, while the former remains noisier, it does retrieve geophysical signals masked by the mascons regularization procedure.

[Termes IGN] habitat forestierRésumé : (auteur) The Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius L.) is both an ecosystem engineer and an umbrella species: it has the capacity to modify its environment through cavity excavation, which in turn favors a large range of species that depend on cavities but are unable to dig them themselves (secondary cavity nesters). However, the factors driving cavity excavation by the Black woodpecker at the tree scale remain poorly known. We analyzed the characteristics of trees bearing Black Woodpecker cavities to assess the bird's local habitat requirements and their conservation potential as habitat trees. We compared the traits and characteristics of trees bearing Black Woodpecker cavities (n = 60) and control trees (n = 56) in two managed lowland broadleave-dominated forests in France. We hypothesized that: (i) Cavity-trees would have lower wood density and display more conks of fungi than control-trees; (ii) The local environment of cavity-trees would be less crowded than those of the control trees. In particular, the first branch would be higher up, and their first neighboring tree would be further away from cavity-trees compared to control-trees; (iii) Cavity-trees would display a higher number of other woodpecker cavities and more saproxylic microhabitats than the control-trees. We validated most of our hypotheses and showed that cavity trees differed significantly from their control counterparts. Black Woodpeckers excavate trees with softer wood and higher first branches in a less crowded environment, thus minimizing both the energy dedicated to cavity excavation and predation risk. Second, cavity-trees bear more microhabitats and play a complementary umbrella role than what was documented before. They also appear a good candidate for habitat-tree conservation. In terms of biodiversity-friendly management measures, it would be beneficial to favor large isolated standing trees devoid of low branches (notably beech), especially in stands dominated by other tree species.
