[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The use of remote sensing data with other ancillary data in a geographic information system (GIS) environment is useful to delineate groundwater potential zonation map of Ken-Betwa river linking area of Bundelkhand. Various themes of information such as geomorphology, land use/land cover, lineament extracted from digital processing of Landsat (ETM+) satellite data of the year 2005 and drainage map were extracted from survey of India topographic sheets, and elevation, slope data were generated from shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM). These themes were overlaid to generate groundwater potential zonation (GWPZ) map of the area. The final map of the area shows different zones of groundwater prospects, viz., good (5.22% of the area), moderate (65.83% of the area) poor (15.31% of the area) and very poor (13.64% of area). [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A systematic approach of understanding the terrain characteristics at the regional level and then narrowing down to the target areas for detailed mapping not only improves the quality of information but also saves considerably time, cost and manpower. For such activities, satellite-based remote sensing technology has become an efficient tool, due to its synoptic/multi-spectral/multi-temporaI coverage. In the present study, initially, a regional level natural resources assessment was carried out using coarse scale satellite data and then based on the results, a representative site was identified for detailed studies towards resources potential evaluation and to identify the areas undergoing calamities like forest fire. This multi stage study was carried out for a part of Madhya Pradesh, India. The regional set up of the study area was carried out on 1:250,000 scale using IRS LISS III standard FCC analog and digital data. A representative site named 'Gorna'sub-basin of the Son River, was selected for the detailed study at 1:50,000 scale, to mainly address the natural resources related problems of the region. The different thematic maps prepared were integrated in a GIS environment with suitable modeling for ground water prospect zone demarcation and forest fire risk zonation. Using the digital database of various themes, it could also be used appropriately for deriving other developmental plans. The result of the study demonstrate the utility of remote sensing technology for assessment of natural resources potentials at regional and local levels.
