[Termes IGN] World Geodetic System 1984Résumé : (Auteur) The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) successfully acquired terrain elevation data for 80 percent of the Earth's landmass in February 2000. The radar system and data collection scheme designed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) met the global requirements of the U.S. Department of Defence for Level 2 Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED®) JPL processed the raw data into unfinished DTED® 2 and other products that were delivered to two contractors of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The contractors edited the unfinished DTED® 2, updated the associated products, and generated finished products for distribution. Automated processes were developed by each contractor to identify, delineate and set heights for lakes, rivers, and ocean coastlines in conformance with an extensive set of editing rules created to maintain consistency and uniformity in the final products. The finished DTED® is significantly better than the 16 m vertical accuracy required by the original specification. This International GLONASS Experiment (IGEX-98) was jointly sponsored by the International Association of Geodesy's (IAG) Commission VIII for the International Coordination of Space Techniques for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CSTG), the Institute of Navigation's (ION) GLONASS-GPS Interoperability Working Group, the International GPS Service (IGS), and the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS). The IGEX-98 Steering Committee, the ION and the IGS organized a joint workshop on September 13-14, 1999 to discuss the results of IGEX-98 and possible plans for the future. This workshop was held in conjunction with the ION Satellite Division's 12th International Technical Meeting GPS-99 in Nashville, Tennessee (U.S.). Workshop topics included receiver technology, tracking network operations, time and time transfer, precise orbit determination, reference frame comparisons, and plans for future exploitation of GLONASS. [Termes IGN] international GLONASS experimentRésumé : (auteur) The GLONASS system is rapidly becoming of great interest for navigation, timing and geodetic applications, usually in combination with the GPS system. The goal of this paper is to describe the first world-wide campaign of observations of GLONASS satellites, organized with a large international participation. This first campaign, called IGEX98 will be organized in fall 1998. In this paper, we will focus on the scientific objectives and present the on-going preparation for this campaign. We will address several important scientific issues that could be solved in the short term by such a campaign. A large number of organizations have already answered positively to the IGEX98 International Call for Participation.
