[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The overarching goal of this study was to map specific crop types in the Central Valley, California and estimate the effect of classification uncertainty on the calculation of crop evapotranspiration (ETc). A phenology-based classification (PBC) approach was developed to identify crop types based on phenological and spectral metrics derived from the time series of Landsat TM/ETM_ imagery. Phenological metrics, calculated by fitting asymmetric double sigmoid functions to temporal profiles of enhanced vegetation index (EVI), were capable of separating crop types with distinct crop calendars. An innovative method was used to compute spectral metrics to represent crops' spectral characteristics at certain phenological stages instead of any specific imaging date. Crop mapping using these metrics showed a stable performance without influences of low-quality data and inter-annual differences in imaging dates. The requirement for ground reference data by the PBC approach was low because classification algorithms were mostly built according to the knowledge on crop calendars and agricultural practices. Techniques including image segmentation, data fusion with MODIS imagery, and decision tree were incorporated to make the approach effective and efficient. Though moderate accuracy (~65.0 percent) was achieved, ETc calculated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 56 method showed that the estimate of water use was not likely to be significantly affected by the classification error in PBC. All these advantages imply the strength of the PBC approach in the regular crop mapping of the Central Valley. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Although the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) onboard the NASA Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite was not designed for urban applications, its 3-D measurement capability over the globe makes it a nice feature for consideration in monitoring urban heights. However, this has not been previously done. In this paper, we report some preliminary assessment of the GLAS data for building height and density estimation in a suburb of Beijing, China. Building heights can be directly calculated from a GLAS data product (GLA14). Because GLA14 limits height levels to six in each ground footprint, we developed a new method to remove this restriction by processing the raw GLAS data. The maximum heights measured in the field at selected GLAS footprints were used to validate the GLAS measurement results. By assuming a constant incident energy and surface reflectance within a GLAS footprint, the building density can be estimated from GLA14 or from our newly processed GLAS data. The building density determined from high-resolution images in Google Earth was used to validate the GLAS estimation results. The results indicate that the newly developed method can produce more accurate building height estimation within each GLAS footprint (R2 = 0.937, rmse = 6.4 m, and n = 26) than the GLA14 data product (R2 = 0.808, rmse = 11.5 m, and n = 26). However, satisfactory estimation results on building density cannot be obtained from the GLAS data with the methods investigated in this paper. Forest cover could be a challenge to building height and density estimation from the GLAS data. It should be addressed in future research. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a methodology to automatically detect and remove the shadows in high-resolution urban aerial images for urban GIS applications. The image is generated by ADS40, which is a multiple line scanner. The system includes shadow simulation, ray tracing, integrated shadow detection. and shadow removal. The geodetic shadow is simulated from a digital surface model (DSM) and the sun attitude. Using an ADS40 camera model and collinearity equations, the corresponding scan line of the shadow is obtained. Ray tracing is used to determine the visibility of the shadow in the image. A building boundary driven height field ray tracing method is proposed to boost the tracing efficiency. Shadow segmentation is taken from the RGB image at the base of the traced image shadows. The segmentation threshold is derived from the histogram of the traced image shadow area. Shadow removal includes the shadow region and companion region labelling, the histogram processing, and intensity mapping. Some experiment results are presented to show the effectiveness of the methods. [Termes IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this paper is to evaluate spatial resolution effects on image classification. Classification maps were generated with a maximum likelihood (ML) classifier applied to three multi-spectral bands and variance texture images. A total of eight urban land use/cover classes were obtained at six spatial resolution levels based on a series of aggregated Colour Infrared Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quadrangle (DOQQ) subsets in urban and rural fringe areas of the San Diego metropolitan area. The classification results were compared using overall and individual classification accuracies. Classification accuracies were shown to be influenced by image spatial resolution, window size used in texture extraction and differences in spatial structure within and between categories. The more heterogeneous arc the land use/cover units and the more fragmented are the landscapes, the finer the resolution required. Texture was more effective for improving the classification accuracy of land use classes at finer resolution levels. For spectrally homogeneous classes, a small window is preferable. But for spectrally heterogeneous classes, a large window size is required.
