Cartographic generalization simplifies the map content while preserving as much as possible the initial characteristics and spatial relations of the map. The automation of this process requires a deep understanding of the context of each map feature, which involves different criteria such as the shape of the feature, the semantic nature of the feature, or the spatial patterns of its neighbouring features. This is why multiple criteria decision techniques can be relevant during the process. This paper proposes two use cases of cartographic generalization sub-tasks where multiple criteria decision techniques improve past techniques: the classification of urban building blocks and the ordering of the buildings to keep in the map as a priority. In both use cases, the proposed methods are experimented on large real cartographic datasets, and evaluated in comparison to alternative techniques. However, recent studies have reported opposite or inconsistent latitudinal trends in the bottom‐up (plant quality) and top‐down (natural enemies) forces driving herbivory. In addition, these forces have rarely been studied together thus limiting previous attempts to understand the effect of large‐scale climatic gradients on herbivory.
Location : Europe. Time period : 2018–2019. Major taxa studied : Quercus robur.
Methods : We simultaneously tested for latitudinal variation in plant–herbivore–natural enemy interactions. We further investigated the underlying climatic factors associated with variation in herbivory, leaf chemistry and attack rates in Quercus robur across its complete latitudinal range in Europe. We quantified insect leaf damage and the incidence of specialist herbivores as well as leaf chemistry and bird attack rates on dummy caterpillars on 261 oak trees.
Results : Climatic factors rather than latitude per se were the best predictors of the large‐scale (geographical) variation in the incidence of gall‐inducers and leaf‐miners as well as in leaf nutritional content. However, leaf damage, plant chemical defences (leaf phenolics) and bird attack rates were not influenced by climatic factors or latitude. The incidence of leaf‐miners increased with increasing concentrations of hydrolysable tannins, whereas the incidence of gall‐inducers increased with increasing leaf soluble sugar concentration and decreased with increasing leaf C : N ratios and lignins. However, leaf traits and bird attack rates did not vary with leaf damage.

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Combining national forest inventory (NFI) data with auxiliary information allows downscaling and improving the precision of NFI estimates for small domains, where normally too few field plots are available to produce reliable estimates. In most situations, small domains represent administrative units that could greatly vary in size and forested area. In small and poorly sampled domains, the precision of estimates often drop below expected standards.
To tackle this issue, we introduce a downscaling algorithm generating the smallest possible groups of domains satisfying prescribed sampling density and estimation error. The binary space partitioning algorithm recursively divides the population of domains in two groups while the prescribed precision conditions are fulfilled.
The algorithm was tested on two major forest attributes (i.e. growing stock and basal area) in an area of 7,500 km2 dominated by hardwood forests in the centre of France. The estimation domains consisted in 157 municipalities. The field data included 819 NFI plots surveyed during a 5 years period. The auxiliary data consisted in 48 metrics derived from a forest map, photogrammetric models and Landsat images. A model-assisted framework was used for estimation. For each forest attribute, the best model was selected using a best-subset approach using a Bayesian Information Criteria. The retained models explained 58% and 41% of the observed variance for the growing stocks and basal areas respectively. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated using a minimum of 3 NFI points per domain and estimation errors varying from 10 to 50%.
For a target estimation error set to 10%, the algorithm led to a limited number of estimation domains ( The algorithm provides a flexible estimation framework for small area estimation. The key advantages of the approach are relying on its capacity to produce estimations based on a preselected precision threshold and to produce results over the whole area of interest, avoiding areas without any estimates. The algorithm could also be used on any kind of polygon layers (not only administrative ones), provided that the field sampling design enable estimation. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The ionosphere plays an important role in satellite navigation, radio communication, and space weather prediction. However, it is still a challenging mission to develop a model with high predictability that captures the horizontal-vertical features of ionospheric electrodynamics. In this study, multiple observations during 2005–2019 from space-borne global navigation satellite system (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) systems (COSMIC and FY-3C) and the Digisonde Global Ionosphere Radio Observatory are utilized to develop a completely global ionospheric three-dimensional electron density model based on an artificial neural network, namely ANN-TDD. The correlation coefficients of the predicted profiles all exceed 0.96 for the training, validation and test datasets, and the minimum root-mean-square error of the predicted residuals is 7.8 × 104 el/cm3. Under quiet space weather, the predicted accuracy of the ANN-TDD is 30%–60% higher than the IRI-2016 at the Millstone Hill and Jicamarca incoherent scatter radars. However, the ANN-TDD is less capable of predicting ionospheric dynamic evolution under severe geomagnetic storms compared to the IRI-2016 with the STORM option activated. Additionally, the ANN-TDD successfully reproduces the large-scale horizontal-vertical ionospheric electrodynamic features, including seasonal variation and hemispheric asymmetries. These features agree well with the structure revealed by the RO profiles derived from the FORMOSAT/COSMIC-2 mission. Furthermore, the ANN-TDD successfully captures the prominent regional ionospheric patterns, including the equatorial ionization anomaly, Weddell Sea anomaly and mid-latitude summer nighttime anomaly. The new model is expected to play an important role in the application of GNSS navigation and in the explanation of the physical mechanisms involved. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Visual localization is a useful alternative to standard localization techniques. It works by utilizing cameras. In a typical scenario, features are extracted from captured images and compared with geo-referenced databases. Location information is then inferred from the matching results. Conventional schemes mainly use low-level visual features. These approaches offer good accuracy but suffer from scalability issues. In order to assist localization in large urban areas, this work explores a different path by utilizing high-level semantic information. It is found that object information in a street view can facilitate localization. A novel descriptor scheme called “semantic signature” is proposed to summarize this information. A semantic signature consists of type and angle information of visible objects at a spatial location. Several metrics and protocols are proposed for signature comparison and retrieval. They illustrate different trade-offs between accuracy and complexity. Extensive simulation results confirm the potential of the proposed scheme in large-scale applications. This paper is an extended version of a conference paper in CBMI’18. A more efficient retrieval protocol is presented with additional experiment results.
