The main limitations are encountered in the urban canyons, consisting in a reduced satellite signal availability and a positioning estimation error due to the impact of Line-of-Sight and Non Line-of-Sight multipath phenomenon. This PhD study allows to understand the impact of the multipath phenomenon on the low-cost GNSS receivers and to prove the need of accurate assessment of the multipath error model affecting the GNSS measurements, especially in urban environment. It consists in the investigation, characterization, and finally, exploitation of the multipath error components affecting the pseudorange and pseudorange-rate measurements, of a single frequency, dual constellation GNSS receiver in the urban environment, operating with GPS L1 C/A and Galileo E1 OS signals. The first goal consists in providing a set of methodologies able to identify, isolate and characterize the multipath error components from the measurements under test. However, considering that the isolation of the multipath error is a complex operation due to the superimposed effects of multipath and thermal noise, the final method consists of isolating the joint contribution of multipath and thermal noise components. The isolated multipath and thermal noise error components are firstly classified depending the corresponding received signal /0 values, and, secondly, statistically characterized by means of Probability Density Function, sample mean and sample variance. Also, the temporal and spatial correlation properties of the isolated error components are calculated by means of a methodology which estimates the temporal correlations as a function of the receiver speed. In addition, an image processing methodology based on the application of a sky-facing fish-eye camera provides the determination of an empirical /0 threshold equal to 35 dB-Hz used to qualitatively identify the Non Line- Of-Sight and Line-Of-Sight received signal reception states. The resulting errors are characterized by a nonsymmetrical, positive biased PDF for a /0 lower than 35 dBHz, while they are characterized by a symmetrical and zero-centred PDF for a /0 higher than 35 dB-Hz. Correlation times for pseudoranges are ranged from around 5s for static and very low speed dynamics to around 1s for high-speed dynamics. Correlation times for pseudorange-rates ranged from around 0.5s for static and very low speed dynamics to around 0.2s for high-speed dynamics, due to the data-rate limitations. The second goal consists in exploiting the multipath and thermal noise error models and the LOS/NLOS received signal reception state estimation in a low-complex EKF-based architecture to improve the accuracy of the PVT estimates. This is obtained by implementing some techniques based on the measurement weighting approach to take into account the statistical properties of the error under exam and by the application of a time differenced architecture design to exploit the temporal correlation properties. Positioning performance of the tested solutions surpassed the performances of a simple EKF architecture and are comparable to the performances of a uBlox M8T receiver. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) An increase of droughts intensity and frequency episodes combined with new extreme climate events are predicted to appear in the Mediterranean Basin due to global warming. In this context, mixed forests have become a sustainable opportunity to mitigate the effects of climate change. Species mixing may lead to the provision of a greater variety of ecosystem services and products while increasing temporal stability compared to pure forests. The development of new models that explain different tree and stand level variables may be vital to better understand the structure, composition and dynamics of this type of forests. In addition, it is essential to analyze how climate may influence these variables in order to design adaptive and sustainable management guidelines for mixed forests under future climate change scenarios. In this study, we sought to advance in the modelization and simulation of different tree and stand level variables along a range of different forest and aridity conditions in Spain. To achieve that, climate-dependent models were fitted using data from the Spanish National Forest Inventory and the WorldClim databases. We focused our study on fifteen Mediterranean tree species from the Pinus, Quercus, and Fagus genus. In our first study, we analyzed how climate may potentially influence the maximum stand carrying capacity, by terms of the maximum stand carrying capacity (SDImax), for the species under study in pure stands. This variable was chosen because its importance in (1) managing density and (2) defining species mixing proportions in mixed forest stands. To do that, climate-dependent MSDR models were fitted for each species under study. 35 different climatic annual and seasonal variables (temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, aridity indexes) were simultaneously included into the models. In this study, climate was found to have significant influence on MSDR, and therefore on the maximum stand carrying capacity (SDImax). The best climate-dependent MSDR models indicated that climatic variables related to temperature better explained the influence of climate on MSDR. Specifically, seasonal (MXTi) and annual (MXT) maximum temperatures were the most representative climatic variables explaining changes in MSDR. Based on the selected seasonal variables, spring and summer were consistently appeared as key periods. A common trend in SDImax variation for coniferous and broadleaf species was found, with higher SDImax values negatively linked to temperature and positively linked to precipitation. This trend suggested that aridity may play a key role reducing the maximum stand 12 carrying capacity of the main Mediterranean tree species. In addition, the impact of climate on maximum stand carrying capacity was evaluated by the creation of the Q index. In general, broadleaved species presented higher values of Q indexes than coniferous species, suggesting that the maximum stand carrying capacity of the first ones would suffer more the influence of potential climate changes. Our findings highlight the importance of using specific climatic variables to better characterize how they affect MSDR. Since we saw that aridity could play a key role influencing stand level variables such as SDImax, we aimed to analyze how it may influence tree growth and tree allometry. Moreover, we aimed to analyze how species mixing effects may influence these variables on mixed forests. Thus, two more studies focused on 29 two-species Mediterranean mixtures were developed. To study the influence of aridity and species mixing on tree growth, the basal area increment within a span of five years (BAI5), was modelled based on individual tree size, stand development and other variables of site and competition. Two distance independent competition indexes were considered: total stand basal area (BA) representing size-symmetric competition, and the basal area of trees larger than the subject tree (BAL) representing size-asymmetric competition. To uncover the complex mixing effects on basal area increment at tree level, competition indexes were splitting into intraspecific and interspecific components. All possible combinations of competition structures were included and tested in the BAI models. Positive, negative or neutral mixing effects were determined by comparing the intraspecific and interspecific component of the selected models. Then, the biological interactions taking place between species were determined based on size-symmetric and sizeasymmetric competition. Finally, the influence of aridity on basal area increment was studied including the De Martonne Index into the BAI models. A common trend among mixtures was found with higher productivity in mixed than pure stands, suggesting that BAI values may increase with the increment of species diversity. Based on model parameters, a novel approach to determine potential biological interactions between species in mixed forests was also presented in this study. Competition seemed to be the most representative biological interaction in coniferconifer mixtures, since neutralism and facilitation may occur more frequently in conifer-broadleaved and broadleaved-broadleaved mixtures. Our findings also suggested that tree productivity may be significantly limited by arid conditions, excepting for Pinus halepensis and Pinus pinea [...] Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is an emerging bistatic remote sensing technique that uses the L-band GNSS signals as sources of opportunity to characterize Earth surface. In this passive radar system, the amplitudes of the GNSS signal reflected by soil and the GNSS signal received directly from the GNSS satellites can be used to derive measurements of reflectivity from which the soil moisture content of the surface is determined. The study of soil moisture content using reflectivity measurements can also be applied for the detection of in-land water body surfaces. In this dissertation, we propose in the first step a non-linear estimate of the GNSS signal amplitude. This estimate is based on a statistical model that we develop for the coherent detection of a GNSS signal quantized on 1 bit. We show with experimentations on synthetic and real data that the proposed estimator is more accurate than reference approaches and provide measurements of the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at a higher rate. When the reflected GNSS signal is obtained in an airborne experiment, its evolution as a function of time is piecewise stationary. The different stationary parts are associatedto different kinds of reflecting surfaces. We propose in a second step a change point detector that takes into account the radar signal characteristics in order to segment the signal. We show on synthetic data that the proposed change point detector can detect and localize changes more accurately than reference approaches present in the literature. This work is applied to airborne GNSSR observation of Earth. We propose in the third step, a new GNSS-R sensor with its implementation on a lightweight airborne carrier. We also propose a new front-end receiver architecture, a software radio implementation of thereceiver, and the complete instrumentation of the airborne carrier. A real flight experimentation has taken place in the North of France obtaining reflections from different landforms. We show using the airborne GNSS measurements obtained, that the proposed radar technique detects different surfaces along the flight trajectory, and in particular in-land water bodies, with high temporal and spatial resolution. We also show that we can localize the edges of the detected water body surfaces at meter accuracy. Note de contenu : General Introduction

Loosely speaking, learning aims at finding the network parameters that not only minimize the network errors on a set of training examples but also yield correct predictions on unseen data. Under the prism of optimization, it boils down to minimizing a high dimensional non-convex function. Generalization can generally be expected when one has access to very large datasets and assumes that both training examples and unseen data are sampled from identically independently distributed random variables. The goal of this thesis is to develop analytical tools to better understand neural network optimization and to improve the design of training algorithms in the context of image classification.
