[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) The ever-increasing number of spatial data sets accessible through spatial data clearinghouses continues to make geographic information retrieval and spatial data discovery major challenges. Such challenges have been addressed in the discipline of Information Retrieval through ranking of data according to inferred degrees of relevance. Spatial data, however, present an additional challenge as they are characteristically made up of geometry, attribute and, optionally, temporal components. As these components are mutually independent of one another, this paper suggests that they be ranked independently of one another. The representation of the results of the independent ranking of these three components of spatial data suggests that representation of the results of the ranking process requires an alternative approach to currently used textual ranked lists: visualisation of relevance in a three-dimensional visualisation environment. To illustrate the possible application of such an approach, a prototype browser is presented. [Termes IGN] UMLRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a common base-model for the classical object-based and field-based conceptual models in GIS. The model, which is called the PGOModel or 'Parameterized Geographic Object Model', is given a formal definition by using the UML modelling language. Within the scope of the paper, it has been shown that the PGOModel encompasses the classical object-based and field-based models. Two extensive examples demonstrate the application of the PGO model. The PGOModel seems ontologically well founded, except for the so-called PGOAtom concept. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Several application domains require handling spatio-temporal data. However, traditional Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and database models do not adequately support temporal aspects of spatial data. A crucial issue relates to the choice of the appropriate granularity. Unfortunately, while a formalisation of the concept of temporal granularity has been proposed and widely adopted, no consensus exists on the notion of spatial granularity. In this paper, we address these open problems, by proposing a formal definition of spatial granularity and by designing a spatio-temporal framework for the management of spatial and temporal information at different granularities. We present a spatio-temporal extension of the ODMG type system with specific types for defining multi-granular spatio-temporal properties. Granularity conversion functions are introduced to obtain attributes values at different spatial and temporal granularities. [Termes IGN] surface du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper focuses on two common problems encountered when using Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data to derive digital elevation models (DEMs). Firstly, LiDAR measurements are obtained in an irregular configuration and on a point, rather than a pixel, basis. There is usually a need to interpolate from these point data to a regular grid so it is necessary to identify the approaches that make best use of the sample data to derive the most accurate DEM possible. Secondly, raw LiDAR data contain information on above-surface features such as vegetation and buildings. It is often the desire to (digitally) remove these features and predict the surface elevations beneath them, thereby obtaining a DEM that does not contain any above-surface features. This paper explores the use of geostatistical approaches for prediction in this situation. The approaches used are inverse distance weighting (IDW), ordinary kriging (OK) and kriging with a trend model (KT). It is concluded that, for the case studies presented, OK offers greater accuracy of prediction than IDW while KT demonstrates benefits over OK. The absolute differences are not large, but to make the most of the high quality LiDAR data KT seems the most appropriate technique in this case. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Mine contamination is one of the main obstacles to economic recovery and other types of progress in mine-affected countries. Therefore, the primary goal of humanitarian demining operations is to clear all suspected minefields and restore them so as to make them available for their previous use. The customary financial shortfall results in the need for priority setting in the mine removal process. This paper describes and investigates a new approach to priority setting within mine action, with the introduction of a hierarchic GIS-based decision support system (DSS). The proposed DSS is aimed at determining the objective priorities required to reduce the risks stemming from mine contamination. DSS is based on a combination of GIS analysis and a multicriteria method in order to enable efficacious mine action management, namely setting humanitarian demining priorities in order to optimally reduce the risk caused by mines. GIS is outlined as a powerful tool for the generation of aggregated information used in multicriteria analysis, as is the link between hierarchic decision levels in the proposed DSS. The results of a demonstration of the proposed GIS-based DSS on mine-affected water resources in Croatia are supplied.
