[Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) Three forms of linear interpolation are routinely implemented in geographical information science, by interpolating between measurements made at the endpoints of a line, the vertices of a triangle, and the vertices of a rectangle (bilinear interpolation). Assuming the linear form of interpolation to be correct, we study the propagation of error when measurement error variances and covariances are known for the samples at the vertices of these geometric objects. We derive prediction error variances associated with interpolated values at generic points in the above objects, as well as expected (average) prediction error variances over random locations in these objects. We also place all the three variants of linear interpolation mentioned above within a geostatistical framework, and illustrate that they can be seen as particular cases of Universal Kriging (UK). We demonstrate that different definitions of measurement error in UK lead to different UK variants that, for particular expected profiles or surfaces (drift models), yield weights and predictions identical with the interpolation methods considered above, but produce fundamentally different (yet equally plausible from a pure data standpoint) prediction error variances. [Termes IGN] MapserverRésumé : (Auteur) Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has many applications and plays a vital role in the majority of the daily operations by government and public administration. However, due to its technical complexity and cost, communities lacking the expertise and resources cannot benefit from this technology. The OpenCIS project, a user-friendly free Open Source GIS-based Web Community Information System, seeks to address this issue by bridging the gap between a simple map viewer and full GIS, representing one of the first steps towards the goal of grassroots empowerment through GIS technology. [Termes IGN] transport collectifRésumé : (Auteur) Recent developments in miniaturization of computing devices, in location-sensing technology and in ubiquitous short-range wireless networks enable new types of social behaviour. This paper investigates one novel application of these technologies, ad hoc inner-urban shared-ride trip planning: Transportation clients such as pedestrians are seeking ad hoc shared rides from transportation hosts such as private automobiles, buses, taxi cabs or trains. While centralized trip planners are challenged by assigning clients and hosts in an ad hoc manner, in particular for non-scheduled hosts, we consider the transportation network as a mobile geosensor network of agents that interact locally by short-range communication and heuristic wayfinding strategies. This approach is not only fully scalable; we can also demonstrate that with short-range communication, and hence, incomplete transportation network knowledge a system still can deliver near-to-optimal trips. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) Forest-management decision-support systems are largely monolithic structures. Spatial details are left out during the optimization process and are elaborated during the operational planning. This might produce misleading results and plans that are impossible to implement. In this paper, a forest-management spatial decision-support systems is presented, in which spatial formulation needed for wildlife models is included during the optimization process. To this end, a multiple-objective genetic algorithm is combined with a geographical information system. An online spatial evaluation of the objective functions is made possible. This is illustrated by a pilot study in Kirkhill forest, Aberdeen. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) Large concentrations of herbicide were sprayed onto the forests of southern Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s. Over 30 years later, many of these contaminated forests have regained full canopy cover, albeit with reduced chlorophyll content. The European Space Agency produces an operational product for the estimation of terrestrial chlorophyll content over large areas of terrain. This product uses data recorded by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on Envisat and is called the MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI). The relationship between historical levels of herbicide contamination and contemporary MTCI was strong (R = 0.86) and negative, with high levels of herbicide contamination being associated (via low levels of chlorophyll concentration) with low levels of MTCI. This is the first published study to demonstrate a relationship between MTCI and a surrogate for chlorophyll content. The next stage of this research is to build on the strength of this relationship and use contemporary MTCI to estimate historical herbicide levels during the 1960s and 1970s across southern Vietnam.
