[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) This paper gives an account of day-night active forest fire monitoring conducted over the sub-tropical and moist temperate forests of the Uttaranchal State, India, during 2005 using the Defence Meteorological Satellite Program - Operational Line Scan system (DMSP-OLS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data. The state experienced heavy fire episodes during May-June 2005 and daily datasets of DMSP-OLS (night-time) and selected cloud-free MODIS (daytime) datasets were used in mapping active fire locations. DMSP-OLS collects data in visible (0.5 to 0.9 um) and thermal (10.5 to 12.5 um) bands and detects dim sources of lighting on the earth's surface, including fires. The enhanced fire algorithm for active fire detection (version 4) was used in deriving fire products from MODIS datasets. Fire locations derived from DMSP-OLS and MODIS data were validated with limited ground data from forest department and media reports. Results of the study indicated that the state experienced heavy fire episodes, most of them occurring during night-time rather than daytime. Validation of satellite-derived fires with ground data showed a high degree of spatial correlation. [Termes IGN] tempête de poussièreRésumé : (Auteur) An algorithm has been developed to quantitatively retrieve dust properties (identification, optical thickness, particle radius, and dust density) from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) aboard Meteosat-8, the first of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG). Two SEVIRI thermal infrared (IR) window channels (10.8 um and 12 um) were used to monitor the dust event of 3 March 2004 over the Sahara in northern Africa. The identification and evolution of dust are well depicted by SEVIRI data with high spatial resolution (approximately 3 km) and high temporal resolution (15 minutes). This demonstrates the capability of a geostationary advanced imager to monitor dust events over land, their migration and the corresponding air quality. [Termes IGN] pression atmosphériqueRésumé : (Auteur) The primary objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of satellite-derived estimates of cloud-top height (CTH). These estimates were derived using hourly data from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-12) Imager and Sounder instruments. In addition, CTHs were derived using data from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), located on the polar-orbiting Aqua platform. Cloud physics lidar (CPL) data taken during the Atlantic-THORPEX Regional Campaign (ATReC) were used as the reference data set. Two cases were examined, one containing clouds at many different levels (5 December 2003) and one consisting entirely of mid-level clouds (between 4 and 10 km, 28 November 2003). For the first case, 19.4% of the Sounder pixels and 28.0% of the Imager pixels were within +0.5 km of the CPL measurement, while 51.5% of the Sounder pixels and 64.3% of the Imager pixels were within +1.5 km. For the second case, 29.7% of the Sounder pixels and 39.9% of the Imager pixels were within +0.5 km of the CPL measurement, while 85.2% of the Sounder pixels and 85.1% of the Imager pixels were within +1.5 km. The results indicate that MODIS CTH retrievals may provide an improvement over heights derived using geostationary instruments, especially for cases where cloud heights are not highly variable. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) A method is described for integrating panchromatic (P) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) features into multispectral (XS) images using conjointly the modified Brovey transform (MBT) and the 'à trous' wavelet decomposition (ATDW). The MBT is based on the local modulation of each multispectral image by the ratio of the new and initial intensity components to produce new multispectral images directly. The ATWD allows extraction of features from P and SAR images, which are combined through a feature selection rule to integrate into the initial intensity component. For evaluating the effect of each feature selection on new XS images, experimental results are conducted on SPOT (XS, P) and Radarsat (SAR) images using both visual inspection and many refined statistical measures. [Termes IGN] transformation intensité-teinte-saturationRésumé : (Auteur) Various fusion methods have been developed for improving data spatial resolution. The methods most encountered in the literature are the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) transform, the Brovey transform, the principal components algorithm (PCA) fusion method, the Gram-Schmidt fusion method, the local mean matching method, the local mean and variance matching method, the least square fusion method, the discrete wavelet fusion method including Daubechies, Symlet, Coiflet, biorthogonal spline, reverse biorthogonal spline, and Meyer wavelets, the wavelet-PCA fusion method, and the crossbred IHS and wavelet fusion method. Using various evaluation indicators such as two-dimensional correlation, relative difference of means, relative variation, deviation index, entropy difference, peak signal-to-noise ratio index and universal image quality index, as well as photo-interpretation methods and techniques, results of the above fusion methods were compared and comments on the fusion methods and potential of evaluation indicators were made. Among data fusion methods and indicators the local mean and variance matching methods proved the most efficient and the peak signal-to-noise ratio indicator proved the most appropriate for the evaluation of data fusion results.
