[Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) To identify the potential usability problems of Web mapping sites, four different sites were evaluated: Google Maps, MSN Maps & Directions, MapQuest, and Multimap. The experiment comprised a series of expert evaluations and user tests. During the expert evaluations, eight usability engineers and eight cartographers examined the Web mapping sites by paying attention to their features and functionality. Additionally, eight user tests were carried out by ordinary users in a usability laboratory. In all, 403 usability problems were identified during the trial and were grouped according to their severity. A qualitative description is given of these usability problems, many of which were related to search operations that the users performed at the Web mapping sites. There were also several problems relating to the user interface, map visualisation, and map tools. We suggest some design guidelines for Web mapping sites based on the problems we identified and close the paper with a discussion of the findings and some conclusions. [Termes IGN] visualisation cartographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of map design is to create, in the mind of map users, an abstraction of the real world appropriate to the map's purpose. The success of the design depends not only on the cartographer's skill but also on the user's ability to read the map and on the particular circumstances of its use. If the user does not understand the meaning of the map symbols, this may lead to frustration or misinterpretations. If, in a mobile map context, users can be provided, in real-time, with map symbols adapted to particular use situations and user preferences, more effective map reading could result. This paper studies those user aspects where map symbols and other visualization are adapted for mobile users' specific needs. A discussion on the importance of understanding cartographic principles in mobile map design is followed by the description of an adaptive mobile map service implemented within an EU project called "GiMoDig." This service delivers maps with different point of interest (PoI) symbols and different map designs for varying user groups in different use situations. The paper describes how the cartographic design was evaluated and how the intuitivity of the map symbols was tested. Finally, conclusions and recommendations for future research topics are discussed. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Cartographers' main objective in map design is to create in the mind of a map reader (i.e. user) an abstraction of the real world appropriate to the map's purpose. The final result depends, not only on the cartographers', but also users' skills and ways to perceive, as well as on the map usage situation. Interruptions during map reading process of mobile maps occur, when the conceptual models of the cartographer and the user do not match, e.g. if the user does not understand the symbols, or the overall layout of the mobile map. This can be frustrating from the users' point of view. It is thought here, that by bringing context awareness into the maps on mobile devices, interruptions in map reading process could be decreased, by providing each user with symbols that are adapted to the usage situation and user preferences in real-time. In this paper some ideas, of how to implement context awareness into mobile maps by personalisation, are presented.
