Résumé :	(auteur) Landmark buildings are salient features for spatial cognition on maps. Distinctive outlines are the major visual characteristics that separate landmark buildings from their surrounding environments. The automatic symbolization of landmark outlines facilitates recognition and map production. As users often recognize landmarks by the outlines of their façades from a street view, this study proposes an automatic method for automatically generating representations of the outlines of landmark buildings in four steps: (1) extract outlines from street-view photographs using GrabCut method, (2) vectorize the extracted building outlines, (3) simplify outline shapes, and (4) symbolize the simplified building outlines in three dimensions (3D). We used the proposed method to generate test data with symbolized outlines for eight buildings in a real-world environment for a wayfinding experiment in which the subjects used the building representations to identify landmark buildings and evaluated their perception of the generated maps. The subjects successfully recognized these buildings based on the symbolized outlines on a map, expressed satisfaction with the manually generated 3D symbols, and reported the same or similar ease of building recognition using 2D or 3D symbolized outlines.

Résumé :	(auteur) This paper evaluates cognitively plausible geovisualization techniques for mapping movement data. With the widespread increase in the availability and quality of space-time data capturing movement trajectories of individuals, meaningful representations are needed to properly visualize and communicate trajectory data and complex movement patterns using geographic displays. Many visualization and visual analytics approaches have been proposed to map movement trajectories (e.g. space-time paths, animations, trajectory lines, etc.). However, little is known about how effective these complex visualizations are in capturing important aspects of movement data. Given the complexity of movement data which involves space, time, and context dimensions, it is essential to evaluate the communicative efficiency and efficacy of various visualization forms in helping people understand movement data. This study assesses the effectiveness of static and dynamic movement displays as well as visual variables in communicating movement parameters along trajectories, such as speed and direction. To do so, a web-based survey is conducted to evaluate the understanding of movement visualizations by a nonspecialist audience. This and future studies contribute fundamental insights into the cognition of movement visualizations and inspire new methods for the empirical evaluation of geovisualizations.

Résumé :	(auteur) Humans increasingly rely on GPS-enabled mobile maps to navigate novel environments. However, this reliance can negatively affect spatial learning, which can be detrimental even for expert navigators such as search and rescue personnel. Landmark visualization has been shown to improve spatial learning in general populations by facilitating object identification between the map and the environment. How landmark visualization supports expert users’ spatial learning during map-assisted navigation is still an open research question. We thus conducted a real-world study with wayfinding experts in an unknown residential neighborhood. We aimed to assess how two different landmark visualization styles (abstract 2D vs. realistic 3D buildings) would affect experts’ spatial learning in a map-assisted navigation task during an emergency scenario. Using a between-subjects design, we asked Swiss military personnel to follow a given route using a mobile map, and to identify five task-relevant landmarks along the route. We recorded experts’ gaze behavior while navigating and examined their spatial learning after the navigation task. We found that experts’ spatial learning improved when they focused their visual attention on the environment, but the direction of attention between the map and the environment was not affected by the landmark visualization style. Further, there was no difference in spatial learning between the 2D and 3D groups. Contrary to previous research with general populations, this study suggests that the landmark visualization style does not enhance expert navigators’ navigation or spatial learning abilities, thus highlighting the need for population-specific mobile map design solutions.

Résumé :	(auteur) The availability of Spatiotemporal Big Data has provided a golden opportunity for time geographical studies that have long been constrained by the lack of individual-level data. However, how to store, manage, and query a huge number of time geographic entities effectively and efficiently with complex spatiotemporal characteristics and relationships poses a significant challenge to contemporary GIS platforms. In this article, a hierarchical compressed linear reference (CLR) model is proposed to transform network-constrained time geographic entities from three-dimensional (3D) (x, y, t) space into two-dimensional (2D) space. Accordingly, time geographic entities can be represented as 2D spatial entities and stored in a classical spatial database. The proposed CLR model supports a hierarchical linear reference system (LRS) including not only underlying a link-based LRS but also multiple higher-level route-based LRSs. In addition, an LRS-based spatiotemporal index structure is developed to index both time geographic entities and the corresponding hierarchical network. The results of computational experiments on large datasets of space–time paths and prisms show that the proposed hierarchical CLR model is effective at storing and managing time geographic entities in road networks. The developed index structure achieves satisfactory query performance in milliseconds on large datasets of time geographic entities.

Résumé :	(auteur) Les annuaires professionnels anciens, édités à un rythme soutenu dans de nombreuses villes européennes tout au long des XIXe et XXe siècles, forment un corpus de sources unique par son volume et la possibilité qu'ils donnent de suivre les transformations urbaines à travers le prisme des activités professionnelles des habitants, de l'échelle individuelle jusqu'à celle de la ville entière. L'analyse spatiotemporelle d'un type de commerces au travers des entrées d'annuaires demande cependant un travail considérable de recensement, de transcription et de recoupement manuels. Pour pallier cette difficulté, cet article propose une approche automatique pour construire et visualiser un graphe de connaissances géohistorique des commerces figurant dans des annuaires anciens. L'approche est testée sur des annuaires du commerce parisien du XIXe siècle allant de 1799 à 1908, sur le cas des métiers de la photographie.

Résumé :	(auteur) A healthy acoustic environment is an essential component of sustainable cities. Various noise monitoring and simulation techniques have been developed to measure and evaluate urban sounds. However, sensing large areas at a fine resolution remains a great challenge. Based on machine learning, we introduce a new application of street view imagery — estimating large-area high-resolution urban soundscapes, investigating the premise that we can predict and characterize soundscapes without laborious and expensive noise measurements. First, visual features are extracted from street-level imagery using computer vision. Second, fifteen soundscape indicators are identified and a survey is conducted to gauge them solely from images. Finally, a prediction model is constructed to infer the urban soundscape by modeling the non-linear relationship between them. The results are verified with extensive field surveys. Experiments conducted in Singapore and Shenzhen using half a million images affirm that street view imagery enables us to sense large-scale urban soundscapes with low cost but high accuracy and detail, and provides an alternative means to generate soundscape maps. reaches 0.48 by evaluating the predicted results with field data collection. Further novelties in this domain are revealing the contributing visual elements and spatial laws of soundscapes, underscoring the usability of crowdsourced data, and exposing international patterns in perception.

Résumé :	(Auteur) In order to design better pan-scalar maps, i.e. interactive, zoomable, multi-scale maps, we need to understand how they are perceived, understood, processed, manipulated by the users. This paper reports an experiment that uses an eye-tracker to analyse the gaze behaviour of users zooming and panning into a pan-scalar map. The gaze data from the experiment shows how people look at landmarks to locate the new map view after a zoom. We also identified different types of behaviours during a zoom when people stare at the mouse cursor, or during a pan where the gaze follows a landmark while the map translates.

Résumé :	(auteur) It is a fundamental and vital task to enhance the perception capability of the point cloud learning network in 3D machine vision applications. Most existing methods utilize feature fusion and geometric transformation to improve point cloud learning without paying enough attention to mining further intrinsic information across multiple network layers. Motivated to improve consistency between hierarchical features and strengthen the perception capability of the point cloud network, we propose exploring whether maximizing the mutual information (MI) across shallow and deep layers is beneficial to improve representation learning on point clouds. A novel design of Maximizing Mutual Information (MMI) Module is proposed, which assists the training process of the main network to capture discriminative features of the input point clouds. Specifically, the MMI-based loss function is employed to constrain the differences of semantic information in two hierarchical features extracted from the shallow and deep layers of the network. Extensive experiments show that our method is generally applicable to point cloud tasks, including classification, shape retrieval, indoor scene segmentation, 3D object detection, and completion, and illustrate the efficacy of our proposed method and its advantages over existing ones. Résumé :	(auteur) Data management and analysis are challenging with big Earth observation (EO) data. Expanding upon the rising promises of data cubes for analysis-ready big EO data, we propose a new geospatial infrastructure layered over a data cube to facilitate big EO data management and analysis. Compared to previous work on data cubes, the proposed infrastructure, GeoCube, extends the capacity of data cubes to multi-source big vector and raster data. GeoCube is developed in terms of three major efforts: formalize cube dimensions for multi-source geospatial data, process geospatial data query along these dimensions, and organize cube data for high-performance geoprocessing. This strategy improves EO data cube management and keeps connections with the business intelligence cube, which provides supplementary information for EO data cube processing. The paper highlights the major efforts and key research contributions to online analytical processing for dimension formalization, distributed cube objects for tiles, and artificial intelligence enabled prediction of computational intensity for data cube processing. Case studies with data from Landsat, Gaofen, and OpenStreetMap demonstrate the capabilities and applicability of the proposed infrastructure.

Résumé :	(auteur) The adoption of technology in urban participatory planning with tools such as Virtual Geographic Environments (VGE) promises a broader engagement of urban dwellers, which should ultimately lead to the creation of better cities. However, the authorities and urban experts show hesitancy in endorsing these tools in their practices. Indeed, several parameters must be wisely considered in the design of VGE; if misjudged, their impact could be damaging for the participatory approach and the related urban project. The objective of this study is to engage participants (N = 107) with common tasks conducted in participatory sessions, in order to evaluate the users’ performance when manipulating a VGE. We aimed at assessing three crucial parameters: (1) the VGE representation, (2) the participants’ idiosyncrasies, and (3) the nature of the VGE format. The results demonstrate that the parameters did not affect the same aspect of users’ performance in terms of time, inputs, and correctness. The VGE representation impacts only the time needed to fulfill a task. The participants’ idiosyncrasies, namely age, gender and frequency of 3D use also induce an alteration in time, but spatial abilities seem to impact all characteristics of users’ performance, including correctness. Lastly, the nature of the VGE format significantly alters the time and correctness of users interactions. The results of this study highlight concerns about the inadequacies of the current VGE practices in participatory sessions. Moreover, we suggest guidelines to improve the design of VGE, which could enhance urban participatory planning processes, in order to create better cities.
