[Termes IGN] standardRésumé : (auteur) Accessibility to tactile maps is limited due to their expensive and time-consuming development. Acceleration of their production requires standardized design guidelines that consider symbol design and production methods. In this paper, based on a review of research and best practice, we summarize knowledge on how to design tactile maps properly and provide a selection of highly legible, recommended symbols for the compilation of tactile maps. We also examine generalization constraints and other design parameters that are necessary for the standardization of tactile mapping. Finally, we explore differences in tactile map design depending upon the selected production method. Over the years, many useful guidelines have been developed although they remain unknown to the wider audience. There is still a long way to go in creating a global standard for the design of tactile maps. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Map generalisation is one of the processes of map design, when the spatial data used to make the map is too detailed for the scale of the map. Map generalisation seeks to abstract and simplify this detailed spatial information to represent it on the map with a good legibility. Map generalisation involves different types of transformations: selection, simplification, displacement, aggregation, collapse, etc. Historically, computational geometry researchers greatly contributed to the automation of map generalisation by proposing algorithms to achieve some of these atomic transformations. But the research questions addressed by researchers on map generalisation have changed over the years, with the progress on the automation, and the changes in the way people use maps (apparition of multi-scale zoomable web maps). Is map generalisation still a computational cartography problem? To discuss this rhetorical question, this presentation illustrates the current issues of map generalisation, with past contribution of computational cartography and possible computational cartography problems. For instance, there are still needs for new specific algorithms, either because maps are much more diverse, or because the larger scale range calls for new transformations. As maps tend to mix elements of topographic maps and elements of schematized maps, computational cartography is also relevant to solve this task. Finally, as the current trend in map generalisation is the use of deep learning models, the presentation discusses the relevance of computational cartography techniques in this context. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : PROMETHEE Résumé : (auteur) Cartographic generalization is a process similar to text summarization that transforms a map when scale is reduced. Cartographic generalization simplifies the map content while preserving as much as possible the initial characteristics and spatial relations of the map. The automation of this process requires a deep understanding of the context of each map feature, which involves different criteria such as the shape of the feature, the semantic nature of the feature, or the spatial patterns of its neighbouring features. This is why multiple criteria decision techniques can be relevant during the process. This paper proposes two use cases of cartographic generalization sub-tasks where multiple criteria decision techniques improve past techniques: the classification of urban building blocks and the ordering of the buildings to keep in the map as a priority. In both use cases, the proposed methods are experimented on large real cartographic datasets, and evaluated in comparison to alternative techniques. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Recently, many researchers tried to generate (generalised) maps using deep learning, and most of the proposed methods deal with deep neural network architecture choices. Deep learning learns to reproduce examples, so we think that improving the training examples, and especially the representation of the initial geographic information, is the key issue for this problem. Our article extracts some representation issues from a literature review and proposes different ways to represent vector geographic information as a tensor. We propose two kinds of contributions: 1) the representation of information by layers; 2) the representation of additional information. Then, we demonstrate the interest of some of our propositions with experiments that show a visual improvement for the generation of generalised topographic maps in urban areas.
