Titre : Building large urban environments from unstructured point data Type de document : Article/Communication Auteurs : Florent Lafarge, Auteur ; Clément Mallet , Auteur Editeur : New York : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE Année de publication : 2011 Conférence : ICCV 2011, IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision 06/11/2011 13/11/2011 Barcelone Espagne Proceedings IEEE Importance : pp 1068 - 1075 Note générale : bibliographie Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : (auteur) We present a robust method for modeling cities from unstructured point data. Our algorithm provides a more complete description than existing approaches by reconstructing simultaneously buildings, trees and topologically complex grounds. Buildings are modeled by an original approach which guarantees a high generalization level while having semantized and compact representations. Geometric 3D-primitives such as planes, cylinders, spheres or cones describe regular roof sections, and are combined with mesh-patches that represent irregular roof components. The various urban components interact through a non-convex energy minimization problem in which they are propagated under arrangement constraints over a planimetric map. We experimentally validate the approach on complex urban structures and large urban scenes of millions of points. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (auteur) In this paper we propose a probabilistic supervised classification algorithm for LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) point clouds. Several object classes (i.e. ground, building and vegetation) can be separated reliably by considering each point's neighbourhood. Based on Conditional Random Fields (CRF) this contextual information can be incorporated into classification process in order to improve results. Since we want to perform a point-wise classification, no primarily segmentation is needed. Therefore, each 3D point is regarded as a graph's node, whereas edges represent links to the nearest neighbours. Both nodes and edges are associated with features and have effect on the classification. We use some features available from full waveform technology such as amplitude, echo width and number of echoes as well as some extracted geometrical features. The aim of the paper is to describe the CRF model set-up for irregular point clouds, present the features used for classification, and to discuss some results. The resulting overall accuracy is about 94 %. [Termes IGN] zone urbaine denseRésumé : (auteur) We propose a context-based classification method for point clouds acquired by full waveform airborne laser scanners. As these devices provide a higher point density and additional information like echo width or type of return, an accurate distinction of several object classes is possible. However, especially in dense urban areas correct labelling is a challenging task. Therefore, we incorporate context knowledge by using Conditional Random Fields. Typical object structures are learned in a training step and improve the results of the point-based classification process. We validate our approach with two real-world datasets and by a comparison to Support Vector Machines and Markov Random Fields. Three dimensionality features are calculated on spherical neighborhoods at various radius sizes. Based on combinations of the eigenvalues of the local structure tensor, they describe the shape of the neighborhood, indicating whether the local geometry is more linear (1D), planar (2D) or volumetric (3D). Two radius-selection criteria have been tested and compared for finding automatically the optimal neighborhood radius for each point. Besides, such procedure allows a dimensionality labelling, giving significant hints for classification and segmentation purposes. The method is successfully applied to 3D point clouds from airborne, terrestrial, and mobile mapping systems since no a priori knowledge on the distribution of the 3D points is required. Extracted dimensionality features and labellings are then favorably compared to those computed from constant size neighborhoods.
