[Termes IGN] Triangulated Irregular NetworkRésumé : (auteur) This chapter focuses on the automatic generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) on the basis of the three-dimensional (3D) point clouds generated by airborne topographic LiDAR sensors. A DTM is a mathematical representation (model) of the ground surface, most often in the form of a regular grid, in which a unique elevation value is assigned to each pixel. Thus, objects, including permanent off-ground components such as vegetation and buildings, can be detected. When the latter are included, reference is made to the digital surface model (DSM), used to analyze the ground surface visible from the sky (i.e. the surface which can be obtained natively in standard optical imagery). Based on the part of pre-classified 3D point cloud data which corresponds to trees, we present a novel framework which involves a downsampling of the original data, a projection of the downsampled data onto a horizontally oriented plane, a mean-shift-based segmentation of the projected points, a transfer of the segmentation results to the original data, a refinement of the segmentation results via segment-based shape analysis, and a localization of respective tree trunks. The results derived for a benchmark dataset reveal that all individual trees are correctly detected and localized with both acceptable accuracy and reasonable computational effort. My main professional activities, since my PhD defence in 2010, in the MATIS team of the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN), are described here. It may also include recall to previous works of the 2007-2010 period. I was recruited in the research department of IGN in 2005, being a civil servant. I first started as engineer on 3D airborne lidar point cloud processing in urban, natural, and seashore environments during the 2005-2007 period. Then, I focused on the emerging fullwaveform lidar technology during my PhD thesis, with a slight emphasis on urban areas (2007-2010). Since 2010, I took the lead of the research group that deals with land-cover mapping and change detection as well as 2D/3D geodatabase evaluation. Now, it encompasses more generally semantization and reconstruction issues for scene understanding. I naturally moved from airborne lidar data to any kind of geospatial/overhead remote sensing data (mainly satellite and airborne vertical imagery). Some of the developed methods has been eventually specialized to 3D terrestrial point clouds. [...] Note de contenu : PART ONE - SCIENTIFIC SYNTHESIS

[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The canopy density model (CDM), a new product interpolated from airborne laser scanner (ALS) data and dedicated to forest structure characterization is presented. It exploits both the multiecho capability of the ALS and a nonparametric density estimation technique called kernel density estimators (KDEs). The CDM is used to delineate the outmost perimeter of vegetation features and to compute forest crown cover (CrCO). Contrary to other works that focus on single-layer forest canopies, CrCo is derived here for each layer, namely, the overstory, the understory, and ground vegetation. The root-mean-square error of prediction determined by using field data acquired over 44 forest stands in a forest in Portugal allows the testing of the reliability of the method: It ranges from 6.21% (overstory) to 13.76% (ground vegetation). In addition, we investigate the ability of the CDM to map the CrCo for individual trees. Finally, two existing methods have been applied to our study site in order to assess improvements, advantages, and drawbacks of our approach. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) The automatic analysis of large 3D point clouds represents a crucial task in photogrammetry, remote sensing and computer vision. In this paper, we propose a new methodology for the semantic interpretation of such point clouds which involves feature relevance assessment in order to reduce both processing time and memory consumption. Given a standard benchmark dataset with 1.3 million 3D points, we first extract a set of 21 geometric 3D and 2D features. Subsequently, we apply a classifier-independent ranking procedure which involves a general relevance metric in order to derive compact and robust subsets of versatile features which are generally applicable for a large variety of subsequent tasks. This metric is based on 7 different feature selection strategies and thus addresses different intrinsic properties of the given data. For the example of semantically interpreting 3D point cloud data, we demonstrate the great potential of smaller subsets consisting of only the most relevant features with 4 different state-of-the-art classifiers. The results reveal that, instead of including as many features as possible in order to compensate for lack of knowledge, a crucial task such as scene interpretation can be carried out with only few versatile features and even improved accuracy.
