[Termes descripteurs IGN] varianceRésumé : (Auteur) We introduce a new automated approach to parameterising multi-scale image segmentation of multiple layers, and we implemented it as a generic tool for the eCognition® software. This approach relies on the potential of the local variance (LV) to detect scale transitions in geospatial data. The tool detects the number of layers added to a project and segments them iteratively with a multi-resolution segmentation algorithm in a bottom-up approach, where the scale factor in the segmentation, namely, the scale parameter (SP), increases with a constant increment. The average LV value of the objects in all of the layers is computed and serves as a condition for stopping the iterations: when a scale level records an LV value that is equal to or lower than the previous value, the iteration ends, and the objects segmented in the previous level are retained. Three orders of magnitude of SP lags produce a corresponding number of scale levels. Tests on very high resolution imagery provided satisfactory results for generic applicability. The tool has a significant potential for enabling objectivity and automation of GEOBIA analysis. [Termes descripteurs IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) A methodology for automated extraction of damage indication from very high spatial resolution satellite imagery is presented for the Haitian towns of Carrefour and Leogane following the January 2010 earthquake. Damaged buildings are identified by changes to their shadows between pre- and post-event data. The approach makes use of object-based image analysis concepts to extract relevant information on damage distribution. The methodology selected requires pre-and post-disaster images with similar sun angles and will only be suitable for the detection of collapsed (or partly collapsed) structures. The new methodology proved to be effective for the Carrefour area despite using satellite images of different qualities with inadequate image (co-)registration, producing positively validated results within an acceptable processing time, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the only automated damage assessment method to have delivered appropriate results to requesting relief organizations within a few days of the Haiti earthquake. Four case studies are presented, in which information extraction results from very high spatial resolution (VHSR) satellite images were conditioned and aggregated or disaggregated to regular spatial units. The case studies were embedded in the context of: (1) urban life quality assessment (Salzburg/Austria); (2) post-disaster assessment (Harare/Zimbabwe); (3) emergency response (Lukole/Tanzania); and (4) contingency planning (faked crisis scenario/Germany). The results are made available in different virtual globe environments, using the implemented contextual data (such as satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and auxiliary geodata) as valuable additional context information. Both day-to-day users and high-level decision makers are addressees of this tailored information product. The degree of abstraction required for understanding a complex analytical content is balanced with the ease and appeal by which the context is conveyed. Only ArcGIS Explorer is reviewed, but compares capabilities/shortcomings to alternative virtual globes if necessary.
