[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) 3D remote sensing data from either Lidar or Photogrammetric means are recognized as valuable sources of information for assessing and estimating forest structure and related parameters. Both data types have been used with field inventory data for both mapping forest parameters and supporting multisource inventories. However, such a combination requires the data to be accurately matched in the spatial domain. While 3D remote sensing data might provide metric accuracy, the spatial accuracy of field plots remain largely constrained by the limited precision of GPS measurements under forest canopies. Different approaches have been proposed to improve this data registration issue, mainly through matching algorithms aiming to spatially adjust height information from field inventory with remote sensing-based models of canopy heights (CHM). State of the art approaches rely on either point to surface or point to point matching algorithms. However, the former did not make any hypothesis on the tree position on the CHM and could lead to inappropriate match. And the later relies on strong assumptions on the spatial distribution of trees and are thus sensitive to the quality of the tree apices detected on the CHM. We propose an algorithm taking advantage of both approaches. The algorithm is based on a point to surface matching algorithm constraints by local maxima (LM) extracted from the CHM. A search algorithm moved the field tree map in a given neighborhood, ensuring that the highest field tree is located over a LM. The best position is defined using both the correlation and the height error. The algorithm was tested on 91 plots including different forest types and a range of forest structure. Initial positions were shifted in average by 2.18 m (±1.95 m SD) and led to an average error of 1.61 m (±1.07 m). The higher the tree number, the better the registration. In particular, the terrestrial LiDAR arises as a promising tool to retrieve geometrical characteristics of trees at a millimeter level. This thesis studies the surface reconstruction problem from scattered and unorganized point
clouds, captured in forested environment by a terrestrial LiDAR. We propose a sequence of algorithms dedicated to the reconstruction of forests plot attributes model: the ground and the woody structure of trees (i.e. the trunk and the main branches). In practice, our approaches model the surface with implicit function build with radial basis functions to manage the homogeneity and handle the noise of the sample data points. Our first focus is on the reconstruction of the ground surface whose level of detail is based on local complexity, through alternation between scale refinement, filtering and reconstruction. The result arises from the polygonization of the implicit function expressed as the merging of local approximations by compactly supported radial basis function used as partition of unity. Once the ground is modeled, the topology effects can be ignored in the following computation steps that focus on the modeling of trees. Traditionally, the processing of the woody part is achieved by a discrete reconstruction in the form of a stack of independent building blocks. From such a model, our approach developed for the ground is adapted to approximate the woody part of the tree by a more flexible continuous surface. Expressed as an implicit function, the tree model can be refined by an additional computational step in order to describe precisely the geometry. With this in mind, we propose a method dedicated to the fine reconstruction of occluded objects: from 3D samples presenting occlusions,
we use the previously described continuous model to guide a Poisson surface reconstruction. Thus, we guarantee the production of a watertight surface that approximates sharply the point cloud in the visible areas and extrapolates consistently the tree shape in the occlusions.Note de contenu : 1- Introduction

[Termes IGN] surface terrièreRésumé : (auteur) We proposed a new area-based approach to process Lidar point clouds and develop new sets of metrics to improve models dedicated to predict forest parameters. First, we introduced point normalization based on penetration depth below the outer canopy layer to avoid biases introduced by ground normalization and canopy surface heterogeneity during metric computation. Second, we proposed computation of area and volume metrics from canopy surface models computed from both first and last returns to better characterize the 3D plot heterogeneity. The set of proposed metrics were combined with traditional ones, based on point height above ground level, to measure their contribution to models of basal area (BA) and aboveground volume (AGV). The modeling framework included a wide range of forest types, canopy structures and Lidar characteristics. Models were developed for all sites grouped together or separately. In each case, the set of metrics was submitted to a hierarchical clustering process to select the best variables to be included in the models that were further established using a best-subset method. Overall, the introduction of the proposed metrics allowed a reduction in models root mean squared error from − 0.06% to 19.58% according to forest types and target forest parameters. Best improvements were achieved for broadleaved forests, showing the potential of the proposed metrics to efficiently characterize the structure of such porous forest canopies.
