[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Coastal populations are impacted by relative sea level variations, which consist both of absolute sea level variations and of vertical land motions. This paper focuses on the Southwest and Central Pacific region, a recognized vulnerable region to sea level rise and where a large range of vertical land motion dynamics is observed. We analyse vertical displacement rates obtained from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) by different analysis centres. We study the role played by modelled parameters, such as step discontinuities (due to equipment changes, earthquakes, etc.), in the position time-series analysis. We propose a new modelling approach based on a joint inversion of GNSS position time-series from different analysis centres. The final uncertainty on the vertical land motion rates is estimated as a combination of the uncertainty due to the GNSS data processing itself and the uncertainty due to the stability of the reference frame in which the GNSS data are expressed. We find that the dominant trend in the Southwest and Central Pacific is a moderate subsidence, with an average rate of −1.1 mm yr–1, but significant variations are observed, with displacement rates varying from an uplift of 1.6 ± 0.3 mm yr–1 to a subsidence of −5.4 ± 0.3 mm yr–1. Taking into account the geodynamic context, we assess, for each station, the relevance of current estimates of linear vertical displacement rate and uncertainty for forecasting future coastal sea levels. [Termes IGN] repère de référenceRésumé : (auteur) We review the progress and continuous improvements being made since more than 30 years in the determination and development of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF). We present the modeling innovations introduced in the ITRF2014 elaboration, mainly (1) the estimation of the annual and semi-annual signals embedded in the time series of station coordinates provided by the four space geodesy techniques, and (2) the incorporation of post-seismic deformation (PSD) models for sites subject to major earthquakes. We recall the rank deficiency problem in the ITRF combination model that is related to the specification of the ITRF defining parameters. We evaluate the precision and accuracy of the main ITRF2014 geodetic and geophysical products using some key performance indicators. We address some scientific questions of space geodesy contribution, via ITRF2014 results, to understand geophysical processes that affect the Earth system, such as earthquake displacements, tectonic motions and loading effects. We evaluate in particular the performance of estimating periodic signals versus applying a non-tidal atmospheric loading model. A particular emphasis is devoted to the level of agreement between techniques in terms of seasonal signals, frame physical parameters (origin and scale) and consistency with terrestrial local ties at co-location sites. Main conclusions are then drawn to guide and improve our analysis and combination strategy for future ITRF developments. [Termes IGN] positionnement par télémétrie laser sur satelliteRésumé : (auteur) The realization of the international terrestrial reference frame (ITRF) is currently based on the data provided by four space geodetic techniques. The accuracy of the different technique-dependent materializations of the frame physical parameters (origin and scale) varies according to the nature of the relevant observables and to the impact of technique-specific errors. A reliable computation of the ITRF requires combining the different inputs, so that the strengths of each technique can compensate for the weaknesses of the others. This combination, however, can only be performed providing some additional information which allows tying together the independent technique networks. At present, the links used for that purpose are topometric surveys (local/terrestrial ties) available at ITRF sites hosting instruments of different techniques. In principle, a possible alternative could be offered by spacecrafts accommodating the positioning payloads of multiple geodetic techniques realizing their co-location in orbit (space ties). In this paper, the GNSS–SLR space ties on-board GPS and GLONASS satellites are thoroughly examined in the framework of global reference frame computations. The investigation focuses on the quality of the realized physical frame parameters. According to the achieved results, the space ties on-board GNSS satellites cannot, at present, substitute terrestrial ties in the computation of the ITRF. The study is completed by a series of synthetic simulations investigating the impact that substantial improvements in the volume and quality of SLR observations to GNSS satellites would have on the precision of the GNSS frame parameters.
