At present, most of the commonly used graphic software was designed for general purpose of digital image production; many cartographic principles are not completely satisfied. As a result, a time-consuming modification work is typically required for a convincing cartographic product.
In this thesis, two approaches were studied to improve this situation by focusing on one graphic element, the line. The first approach is dealing with cartographic elaborations of line geometries. New drawing algorithms were developed to generate lines better satisfying the cartographic requirements. Many unsatisfied presentations that often occur at line ends, turns and intersections, can be avoided during the rendering process.
The second approach aims to enrich the line symbols, covering both categories and visual qualities. First, efficient drawing methods were developed to draw some complex lines, including both single and multiple lines. Second, the computer graphic technique of texture mapping was the first time introduced into cartography; which turns out to be an interesting tool to greatly improve line symbolizations. These achievements lead to the production of a new program, SmartLine. It contains a flexible editorial environment, allowing map makers to adjust the graphic attributes of line symbols easily. This work aims to improve the generation of line symbols, which is not only useful for cartographers but also for general users of the interactive map products.

[Termes IGN] représentation du reliefRésumé : (Auteur) Maps with coloured relief shading, modulated by elevation and by exposure to illumination, present topography in a particularly vivid and descriptive manner. Carefully modulated illumination and shading shown in continuous colour tones simulate the third dimension of topography, helping map-readers to conceive more easily the terrain's important landforms. Since the end of the 19th century, cartographers have developed a wide variety of colour schemes. The first part of this paper illustrates the graphical and technical developments of the past, leading to Swiss-style coloured relief shading; the second part presents a new computer-based method for colourizing grey-shaded relief inspired by classic colour schemes. The method uses a colour look-up table and a digital elevation model. The colour look-up table has colours for all combinations of initial grey values and terrain elevations. It is constructed from interactively placed colour reference points. Copyright British Cartographic Society. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Natural hazards like landslides, avalanches, floods and debris flows can result in enormous property damage and human casualties in mountainous regions. Switzerland has always been exposed to a wide variety of natural hazards mostly located in its alpine valleys. Recent natural disasters comprising avalanches, floods, debris flows and slope instabilities led to substantial loss of life and damage to property infrastructure, cultural heritage and environment. In order to offer a solid technical infrastructure, a new concept and expert-tool based on a integrated web-based database/GIS structure is being developed under HazNETH. Given the HazNETH database design contemplates the detection and mapping of diagnostic features from remote sensors (e.g., ground, air and space borne), this paper analyses the use of rernote sensing data in landslides studies during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, including a discussion of its potential and research challenges as result of new operational and forthcoming technologies such as the very high spatial resolution optical and infrared imagery of Ikonos, Quickbird IRS CartoSat-1, ALOS, the satellite based interferometric SAR (InSAR and DInSAR of Radarsat, ERS, Envisat, TerraSAR-X, Cosmo/SkyMed, ALOS), micro-satellites like the Pléiades, DMC, RapidEye, airborne LASER altimetry or ground-based differential interferometric SAR. The use of remote sensing data, whether air-, satellite- or ground-based varies according to three main stages of a landslide relate study, namely a) detection and identification; b) monitoring; c) spatial analysis and hazard prediction. Accordingly, this paper presents and discusses previous applications of remote sensing tools as related to these three main phases, proposing a conceptual framework for the contribution of remote sensing to the design of databases for natural hazards like debris flows, and identifying areas for further research. [Termes IGN] zone à risqueRésumé : (Auteur) Georeferenced highresolution satellite images can be used for acquisition of topographic information, navigation and visualisation for various environmental studies. The present study is part of the multidisciplinary EU project GEOWARN related to monitoring, warning and emergency planning for volcanic hazards in the island of Nisyros, Greece. Here, the main aim was the orthorectification of a 1m resolution pansharpened IKONOS Geo image of Nisyros island. For the orthorectification, a digital elevation model (DEM) with a cell size of 2 m and an RMS accuracy of ca. 3.5 m was used, as well as 38 selected ground control points (GCPs) measured with differential GPS. An objecttopixel space transformation using the ground control points was computed using two different models, a reliefcorrected affine transformation and the polynomial mapping functions of Kratky. These transformations were used for orthorectification and the orthopboto accuracy was evaluated using GCPs as check points. Postprocessing for radiometric improvement of the orthophotos was applied. The ortbophoto and the DEM served as basic tools for subsequent base mapping and visualisation.
