[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Emerging mobile mapping applications create new constraints for cartographers. These constraints should be considered in addition to the traditional cartographic rules used to design maps. Legend colors could be optimized regarding those constraints. A challenge for optimization concerns the preservation of map semiotic quality. In our research, we propose a quantification of the cartographic quality of a map, regarding a given reference map that considers semantic rules of association, differentiation and order conveyed by map colors. Some mobile devices require less energy to display dark colors than lighter ones. In this paper we consider the energy consumption as the contextual constraint to optimize. Map samples are designed, while taking into account some conventional uses of colors for relevant themes: hydrography, vegetation and the background layer. We discuss how to find the best compromise between a contextual constraint (the energy required to display a map on a screen of a mobile device in our example) and the cartographic consistency on colors regarding the initial semantic relationships in the legend. We answer the question of how much can cartographic rules be altered while still preserving semiotic quality. [Termes IGN] spécification de contenuRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we introduce a method for identifying the specific needs of a community from a user survey, and adapting maps accordingly. This method was applied to four different groups of trekkers: walkers, road cyclists, cross-country bikers, and recreational trekkers. Relevant concepts, criticisms and expectations for each group were identified using natural language processing and lexicometry methods and tools. Suggestions for adapting maps focus on data selection and graphic representation. Pedes-trian trails were emphasized using trail-marking signs as graphical symbols and adding numbers which refer to additional information. Specific trails were added to the cross-country hiking map using the difficulty level indi-cation of ski maps. Moreover, contour lines were highlighted for cross-country bikers to help them to understand relief. The road cyclist map was designed at a 1/50 000 scale with generalized data. The slope of cycling paths was indicated by a diverging color scheme to convey the difficulty of different sections of road. This paper describes part of an on-demand map making process and illustrates it for a specific community, trekkers. It has been shown that it is possible to select data and define radical graphic choices as long as the community is targeted enough to have the same needs and wishes. [Termes IGN] programmation par contraintesRésumé : (auteur) The necessary adaptation of mapping applications generates new constraints which should be considered in addition to the traditional cartographic rules used to design maps. Particularly, colors used in the legend could be optimized regarding those constraints. A big stake of such optimization is to preserve the semiotic quality of maps. Therefore, we propose a quantification of the cartographic quality of a map regarding a given reference map and considering semantic rules of association, differentiation and order supposed to be conveyed by the colors of the map. Some mobile devices required more energy to display dark colors than lighter ones. Our example of contextual constraint is then the optimization of the colors in order to lower the energy required to display a map. Three map samples have been designed, while taking more or less into consideration conventional uses of colors for relevant themes: hydrography, vegetation and the background layer. We discuss on how to find the best compromise between a contextual constraint (the energy required to display a map on a screen of a mobile device in our example) and the cartographic consistency on colors regarding the initial semantic relationships in the legend. This supposes to evaluate how far a map supposed to follow cartographic rules can be altered while preserving its semiotic quality. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This article presents a visual variable proposed to help users navigate in a virtual 3D world. This overlay is presented as a disc composed of independent sectors. Each sector conveys information about aggregated data carried from points of interest (POIs). The different parameters of the sectors express different information in a 3D view: the angle the direction of POIs’ group, the color value the density of POIs in this direction and the width of the border their density. This information is quantified the POIs configuration and is updated with users’ navigation.
