[Termes IGN] spécification de processusRésumé : (Auteur) In order to capture and manage their geographic databases, database producers use relatively huge and complex documents : the specifications. Actually, these are the only sources of information describing precisely what is the content of a database, i.e. what is the meaning of each part of the data schema, which object are captured and how they are represented. As such, they are an important tool to describe, manage, distribute, transform and federate databases. Unfortunately, even if they can be precisely organised, these specifications are usually expressed in natural language and thus in a poorly formalised language. Their manipulation is then a hard task, and their automatic manipulation is almost impossible. In this paper, we claim that formalising existing specifications is an important task and we propose an object-oriented model in order to do that. This model contains two main parts: a part formalising which objects of the real world should appear in the database, and a part describing how these objects are represented in the database. These model rely on a set of typical criteria encountered in database specifications: geometric criteria, relationship criteria, and nature criteria. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Database generalisation is a process which aims at producing a geographic database from an initial geographic database in order to satisfy new needs. Starting from the study of an actual database generalisation process developed at the Ministere des Ressources Naturelles of Quebec (MRNQ), our intention was to formalise the cartographic knowledge contained in the process to make it reusable. MRNQ's process has the form of a workflow which contains a list of actions applied to object classes. Since we wanted to extract generic knowledge, we introduced the notions of problem and operation: our assumption is that the cartographic knowledge formalised using these two notions is generic enough to be applied to other cases of generalisation. Thus, we propose a causal graph which associates a set of problems to a set of operations. The utility of such a model is that it offers an explanation for each actions contained in the workflow and allows an anticipation of future problems when creating a new workflow. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) During the cartographic generalisation process, geographic objects cannot just be considered one by one. The way objects are processed clearly depends on their spatial context. In this paper, we first study the nature of spatial context encountered dur ing map generalisation. We differentiate three kinds of relations that an object can have with its environment: being part of a significant group, being in a particular area, being in relation with 'same-level' surrounding objects. We also address the issue of scale- dependency related to spatial context. Then, we study how to represent context-related knowledge in a knowledge-based approach of cartographic generalisation. We discuss several aspects of the representation of objects' spatial context in a geographic data model dedicated to map generalisation: explicit representations of high-level objects, fuzzy representation of objects and relations, multi- scale representation of objects and relations, spatialisation of relations. We also study how context appears in the rules expr essed by cartographers to describe the generalisation process: it can be used to express exceptions, to classify typical operations to b e done, or to express constraints on the final result.
