[Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (auteur) Tweets posted by the general public during disaster events represent timely, up-to-date, and on-site data that may be useful for emergency responders. However, since Twitter data has been deemed to be unverifiable and untrustworthy, it is challenging to identify those reliable and relevant tweets that can inform emergency response operations. Although computational methods exist both to classify overwhelming amounts of tweets and to filter those relevant to emergency response, using contextual geographic information regarding the disaster event to filter tweets has been overlooked. We review the existing research on the quality of data contributed by the general public from a geographical perspective, and then propose an approach to prioritize tweets for emergency response based on their relevance and reliability. The novelty of the approach is twofold: a) the use of both authoritative data such as hazard-related information and on-the-ground reports provided by weather spotters and validated by the National Weather Service; and b) the fact that it leverages tweets content as well as their geographical context and location. Using Hurricane Harvey in 2017 as a case study, results show that by following the proposed approach 79% of tweets sent from post-identified flooded areas were classified as of high or medium relevance and reliability. This suggests that the proposed approach can provide an accurate prioritization of tweets to be used for real time emergency management. [Termes IGN] OpenStreetMapRésumé : (auteur) The SLEUTH model provides a framework for understanding land use evolution around urban areas. Calibration of SLEUTH’s behavioral coefficients can be impacted by scale and nonlinear transitions due to the SLEUTH land use deltatron module’s assumption of linear Markov change probabilities. This study attempted to establish what spatial resolution and temporal scale produces the most accurate forecasts given the linear change assumption. The impact of tiling the input data was also examined. To determine these, SLEUTH was calibrated at four spatial and three temporal scales for Ibadan, Nigeria using both untiled and tiled data. Calibration results were evaluated using accuracy metrics including Figure of Merit (FOM) and mean uncertainty. The best mix of calibration metrics (FOM 0.26) and mean uncertainty (11.64) was achieved at 30 m resolution and an intermediate temporal interval. Tiling input data led to overfitting, allowing good model fit within individual tiles but a reduction in trend recognition across land use types. Subsequently, a 2040 projection that is as accurate as possible, and scientifically justifiable given the available data, was produced. The findings provide a framework for understanding the effect of spatiotemporal scale on SLEUTH inputs that require tiling particularly for urban areas in the global south. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Understanding the spatial scale sensitivity of cellular automata is crucial for improving the accuracy of land use change simulation. We propose a framework based on a response surface method to comprehensively explore spatial scale sensitivity of the cellular automata Markov chain (CA-Markov) model, and present a hybrid evaluation model for expressing simulation accuracy that merges the strengths of the Kappa coefficient and of Contagion index. Three Landsat-Thematic Mapper remote sensing images of Wuhan in 1987, 1996, and 2005 were used to extract land use information. The results demonstrate that the spatial scale sensitivity of the CA-Markov model resulting from individual components and their combinations are both worthy of attention. The utility of our proposed hybrid evaluation model and response surface method to investigate the sensitivity has proven to be more accurate than the single Kappa coefficient method and more efficient than traditional methods. The findings also show that the CA-Markov model is more sensitive to neighborhood size than to cell size or neighborhood type considering individual component effects. Particularly, the bilateral and trilateral interactions between neighborhood and cell size result in a more remarkable scale effect than that of a single cell size. [Termes IGN] talwegRésumé : (Auteur) Terrain analysis uses different workflows to extract features from terrain models for the purpose of understanding topographic patterns and processes. However, the results of different workflows often conflict, leading to uncertainties about feature locations. Instead of relying upon a single workflow, we suggest that a fusion of information from multiple workflows better informs terrain analysis. From terrain data with different degrees of variability, we extracted terrain features related to the set of topographic surface network feature classes {peaks, pits, saddles, ridges, courses} using workflows from free, open-source, and commercial software. A multi-scale analysis produced terrain features with fuzzy membership values for various feature classes and revealed that terrain locations can exhibit characteristics of all classes. Multi-feature maps were created by determining at each location the dominant and second-ranked features, and an uncertainty value. Our multi-method approach incorporated all of the workflows’ multi-scale results and again produced multi-feature maps that increased the confidence of some features and reduced the signal of dissimilar results. We also found that high variability terrain produced crisper features in both spatial extent and membership strength. Our overall conclusion is that multi-scale, multi-feature, and multi-method analyses clarify terrain feature uncertainty. One possible alternative as a visualization of such surface models is a representation based on slope shading – the steeper, the darker – but attenuated to the perceptual bias of overestimation of slope. The empirical work presented here demonstrates that Perceptually Shaded Slope Maps (PSSMs) perform as well or better than either hillshaded or hypsometric images on map-reading tasks, including profile estimation and mental rotation.
