[Termes IGN] téléphone intelligentRésumé : (Auteur) Smartphones have widened the possibilities for low‐cost close‐range image acquisition for three‐dimensional (3D) modelling. They allow the rapid acquisition of large amounts of data for a wide range of applications. However, the accuracy of the models and the automation possibilities depend on the image acquisition conditions and application requirements. In this study, the accuracy and reliability of the derived photogrammetric 3D models are evaluated on a spherical set‐up for close‐range applications (c.30 cm). Different numbers of images, network configurations, targets, devices and camera calibration methodologies are tested and evaluated. Results show that for this close‐range application high accuracy (0·2 mm) and reliability can be achieved. The number of images did not significantly affect the accuracy but was vital for tie‐point detection and image orientation. The use of artificial targets was found to be the key factor in increasing the final accuracy. In contrast, the image calibration strategy and the characteristics of the imaging device did not have a great impact on the results. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Many of the theoretical concepts in photogrammetry are difficult to understand by means of equations and figures. Furthermore, commercial software is not usually adapted to the requirements of teaching and learning. However, photogrammetric simulation software based on virtual worlds can be used to improve both learning and understanding of complex geometrical issues such as the generation of true ortho-images in urban areas, and assists in training and skills development. This paper tackles image orthorectification by means of a photogrammetric simulation and its generation based on digital elevation/building/surface models, and the interior and exterior orientation parameters of the image sensor, namely, a digital camera. Internal processes such as masking and visibility analysis which are necessary to yield successful true ortho-images are reported, with examples from both simple and complex urban environments. [Termes IGN] site archéologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Nowadays there is a huge proliferation of fully automatic image-based solutions producing either three-dimensional (3D) point clouds or 3D models. However, the reliability of the output is not usually reported and clarified. This paper presents a comparison of the 3D modelling results achieved on two rock art shelters at separate archaeological sites using a high-resolution digital camera. The 3D point clouds were produced using automatic image-based photogrammetric and computer vision software running either locally (FOTOGIFLE and VisualSFM) or through a web-based reconstruction service (Autodesk 123D Catch). The first two automatic approaches are compared with a manual bundle block adjustment. Dense image matching was undertaken to densify the point clouds prior to 3D modelling. The derived 3D models are compared with a time-of-flight laser scanning dataset that was used as ground truth. Statistical analysis shows significant metric differences on the digital surface models for the different solutions. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Simulation is a common activity in many fields and pursuits, not only for teaching but also for learning, training, monitoring, research and entertainment, among others. This paper presents the criteria used to develop virtual scenarios for photogrammetric simulation based on both synthetic objects and synthetic images. The workflow used to generate three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds is presented together with the subsequent reconstruction of the metric perspective images (synthetic scenes) emulating any type of frame camera in any kind of terrestrial or aerial set-up, the latter with an aeroplane, helicopter or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A simulator can be used to create 3D virtual worlds in order to improve an understanding of mission planning, generate synthetic image sequences with suitable overlaps, as well as optimising image data acquisition before undertaking expensive photogrammetric surveys in the field.
