[Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) In this chapter, we review and summarize the current state of the art in geovisualization and extended reality (i.e., virtual, augmented and mixed reality), covering a wide range of approaches to these subjects in domains that are related to geographic information science. We introduce the relationship between geovisualization, extended reality and Digital Earth, provide some fundamental definitions of related terms, and discuss the introduced topics from a human-centric perspective. We describe related research areas including geovisual analytics and movement visualization, both of which have attracted wide interest from multidisciplinary communities in recent years. The last few sections describe the current progress in the use of immersive technologies and introduce the spectrum of terminology on virtual, augmented and mixed reality, as well as proposed research concepts in geographic information science and beyond. We finish with an overview of “dashboards”, which are used in visual analytics as well as in various immersive technologies. We believe the chapter covers important aspects of visualizing and interacting with current and future Digital Earth applications. [Termes descripteurs IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) As an important topological relation model, the dimensionally extended 9‐intersection model (DE‐9IM) has been widely used as a basis for standards of queries in spatial databases. However, the negative conditions for the specification of the topological relations within the DE‐9IM have not been studied. The specification of the topological relations is closely related to the definition of the spatial objects and the topological relation models. The interior, boundary, and exterior of the spatial objects, including the point, line, and region, are defined. Within the framework of the DE‐9IM, 43 negative conditions are proposed to eliminate impossible topological relations. Configurations of region/region, region/line, line/line, region/point, line/point, and point/point relations are drawn. The mutual exclusion of the negative conditions is discussed, and the topological relations within the framework of 9IM and DE‐9IM are compared. The results show that: (1) impossible topological relations between spatial objects can be eliminated by the application of 43 negative conditions; and (2) 12 relations between two regions, 31 relations between a region and a line, 47 relations between two lines, three relations between a region and a point, three relations between a line and a point, and two relations between two points can be distinguished by the DE‐9IM. [Termes descripteurs IGN] Web Processing ServiceRésumé : (auteur) Earth environment is extremely complicated and constantly changing; thus, it is widely accepted that the use of a single geo-analysis model cannot accurately represent all details when solving complex geo-problems. Over several years of research, numerous geo-analysis models have been developed. However, a collaborative barrier between model providers and model users still exists. The development of cloud computing has provided a new and promising approach for sharing and integrating geo-analysis models across an open web environment. To share and integrate these heterogeneous models, encapsulation studies should be conducted that are aimed at shielding original execution differences to create services which can be reused in the web environment. Although some model service standards (such as Web Processing Service (WPS) and Geo Processing Workflow (GPW)) have been designed and developed to help researchers construct model services, various problems regarding model encapsulation remain. (1) The descriptions of geo-analysis models are complicated and typically require rich-text descriptions and case-study illustrations, which are difficult to fully represent within a single web request (such as the GetCapabilities and DescribeProcess operations in the WPS standard). (2) Although Web Service technologies can be used to publish model services, model users who want to use a geo-analysis model and copy the model service into another computer still encounter problems (e.g., they cannot access the model deployment dependencies information). This study presents a strategy for encapsulating geo-analysis models to reduce problems encountered when sharing models between model providers and model users and supports the tasks with different web service standards (e.g., the WPS standard). A description method for heterogeneous geo-analysis models is studied. Based on the model description information, the methods for encapsulating the model-execution program to model services and for describing model-service deployment information are also included in the proposed strategy. Hence, the model-description interface, model-execution interface and model-deployment interface are studied to help model providers and model users more easily share, reuse and integrate geo-analysis models in an open web environment. Finally, a prototype system is established, and the WPS standard is employed as an example to verify the capability and practicability of the model-encapsulation strategy. The results show that it is more convenient for modellers to share and integrate heterogeneous geo-analysis models in cloud computing platforms. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Maps are widely used to visualize geo-information so that map users can develop related understandings about the real world. Such a process for communicating information is largely dependent on the rendering of map elements using different symbols (points and linear and area symbols). To meet the demand of more dynamic and comprehensive visualization in map rendering, it is essential to improve the rendering efficiency. This paper focuses on these research topics, especially the difficulty in constructing and drawing linear map symbols. By employing shader language, a function-based linear symbol building and rendering method is presented in this paper. The basic idea of this function-based method is to build a map-rendering solution that employs graphic processing unit (GPU) acceleration technology to improve the rendering efficiency. A ‘function’ is used to represent the algorithm that draws certain simple or complex linear map symbols. This function reflects the structure of a linear map symbol (describing the symbol construction information) and also the rendering process of the symbolized linear map elements (handled on a per-pixel basis by the shader program). Based on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), Styled Layer Descriptor (SLD) specifications, four basic line types (i.e., solid lines, dashed lines, gradient color lines, and transition lines) are implemented in the proposed method, and the implementation of line markers, line joins and line caps is also discussed. Three experiments are conducted to demonstrate improvements in map rendering. The results show that a variety of linear map symbols can be constructed in a uniform way, which suggests that the proposed method addresses the difficulty in drawing linear map symbols. With this method, the efficiency of rendering linear map elements is substantially improved compared to using the graphics device interface plus (GDI+) and anti-grain geometry (AGG) methods; it also provides an applicable approach for developing map rendering systems. Using this function-based concept, the complexity of building linear map symbols and drawing linear map elements can be decreased. [Termes descripteurs IGN] monographieRésumé : (Auteur) Spatio-temporal information (e.g. time, location, person and event) recorded in detail in vast Chinese historical books can provide evidence about the movement of entities (e.g. people, family, army and weapons) and their underlying spatial behaviours. Furthermore, this information largely reflects the process of social development, which makes it valuable to both professional research and public awareness. However, this information cannot be easily expressed and visually utilized because it is often hidden in the text of historical books. Aiming to better realize the potential value of such abundant information derived from historical books and bridging the gap between historical research and geographic space, a feasible and appropriate approach is explored in this article, to guide the transforming process from historical books to historical maps. The hope is that providing the scenarios of historical events will benefit related historical and social research. First, the integral framework of the approach was introduced, and the detail of building the specific spatio-temporal framework for information matching was discussed. Based on the spatio-temporal framework, the specification for the representation of historical books was designed. By extracting the spatio-temporal data from historical books, organizing them according to the specification and matching them with the spatio-temporal framework, the scenarios of historical events in the book (e.g. wars, migration, diseases, natural disasters, mass movement, etc.) can be visually transformed into historical maps. As the most critical writing of the Chinese Twenty-Four Histories, the Records of the Grand Historian (also known as Shiji) was employed as an example to test the proposed approach.
