[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) When a human cartographer designs a map, the symbols represent objects in a way that attempts to convey geographic process occurring at a given scale. The skill is in abstracting patterns of process and representing them in a context at an appropriate scale. The cartographer conveys the essence of the phenomenon by capturing the essential characteristics of a feature. In order for automated cartographic systems to match this subtlety in design and this ability to characterize, they must have cartometric techniques that enable the same abstraction of pattern to take place; techniques that take into account the phenomenological aspects of features. This article utilizes an algorithm for urban space pattern analysis and illustrates how it can be applied to capture the essence of urban settlement in order to generate objective, intermediate design solutions for the representation of urban settlement at a range of scales. Such an algorithm is considered to be one of a growing set of generalization operators that need to be developed as part of a knowledgebased cartographic expert system. The article begins with a description of a "Iine of sight" pattern analysis algorithm applied to road networks and then demonstrates how the algorithm can be used to derive hierarchies of meaningful patterns-patterns which capture the character and extent of urban areas appropriate to a given scale. The article concludes with a discussion of how such techniques may be utilized for automated cartographic generalization of urban space. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Study of the human cartographer as a paradigm for automated map design has led to the identification of 12 generalization techniques that can be used in various combinations and levels of application during the map design process. One of those techniques is displacement : a technique applied locally to regions of the map sufficiently dense with features that they are indistinguishable. Prior to displacement, it is necessary to identify these localized areas (spatial conflicts). When features are displaced, a number of aesthetic considerations need to be addressed. Displacement must not create new conflicts, the general geometric and topological properties of the map must remain the same, and localized distortions need to merge smoothly into the areas surrounding the conflicts. This paper discusses an algorithm that identifies and resolves spatial conflicts and meets the above conditions. Implementation is discussed, together with some test results. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) In the generalization of a concept, we seek to preserve the essential characteristics and behavior of objects. In map generalization, the appropriate selection and application of procedures (such as merging, exaggeration, and selection) require information at the geometric, attribute, and topological levels. This article highlights the potential of graph theoretic representations in providing the topological information necessary for the efficient and effective application of specific generalization procedures. Besides ease of algebraic manipulation, the principal benefit of a graph theoretic approach is the ability to detect and thus preserve topological characteristics of map objects such as isolation, adjacency, and connectivity. While it is true that topologically based systems have been developed for consistency checking and error detection during editing, this article emphasizes the benefits from a mapgeneralization perspective. Examples are given with respect to specific generalization procedures and are summarized as a partial set of rules for potential inclusion in a cartographic knowledge-based system.
