[Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Thematic content in the form of geodata is becoming increasingly available on the web. However, adequate base map information to support appropriate communication of the thematic content is not available in many cases. This base map information might be served through topographic databases available on the web and optimized by means of automated generalization. This article describes an approach based on user profiles, which formally captures the user requirements (preferences) towards the base map and deploys those profiles in a web-based architecture to generate on-demand maps. Those user profiles, which may differ per user, drive the generalization process and produce base maps on demand by taking into account the user requirements as well as the thematic content. The research in this article specifically focuses on the technological environment that generates on-demand base maps incorporating four basic concepts in the user profile: (1) topology awareness between the base map and the thematic content, (2) user-specific base map information at a non-uniform scale to improve the communication of the thematic content, (3) the map specification and (4) inheritance of user profiles. Both existing and new techniques are explored to realize the environment. The approach is evaluated by applying it to a project in the Netherlands dedicated to disseminating physical planning maps through the web. Currently, integration of laser data and images provides the most complete information for various surveying and 3D modelling tasks. However, this integration requires that both data sets are accurately oriented to the same coordinate system. In 2008, the EuroSDR launched the project "Registration Quality - Towards Integration of Laser Scanning and Photogrammetry" in order to collect knowledge about current registration methods and their performance. The project attracted the involvement of numerous research institutes and companies. Therefore, this test gives a quite extensive set of examples and comparisons of the most important registration strategies today. The empirical results indicated that the relative orientation of airborne laser scanning data and aerial images is a feasible method in order to get data sets within the common coordinate frame. The experiment revealed that, currently, the level of automation was not the most significant factor affecting the quality of registration. More important factors included the type of tie features and the implementation of the methods. The processing time was shortest with most automatic methods, whereas the amount of manual work tended to increase the processing times. It should be noted that many of the methods were still at the developmental stage. It is expected that the performance and processing speed, in most cases, can be enhanced in the future. The test data represented an urban area and many of the methods relied upon certain objects, such as buildings. Therefore, the performance of applied methods in non-built environments should be investigated separately. ;
(Auteur)2 : This report is the final report of the EuroSDR project "Atlas of INSPIRE Implementation Methods". In two two-day workshops and one pre-workshop of the INSPIRE Conference in Krakow, June, 2010 we investigated strategies to implement INSPIRE in several members states. We focused specifically on the relations between the implemented strategy and how successful the INSPIRE implementation is perceived in a specific country. A questionnaire was carried out as well. This report describes the project, presents the conclusions and contains the main deliverables of the project which are: -Two workshop reports - Research agenda for the implementation of INSPIRE -A network of SDI-practitioners and scientists across Europe that are strongly involved in the development of INSPIRE SDI-strategies -Scientific paper publications Scientific paper publications: published IJSDIR article [1] and article in progress for CEUS (Journal for Computers, Environment and Urban Systems) -INSPIRE-Conference pre-conference workshop, abstract and presentation -Key documents collection regarding INSPIRE-implementation -Prototype INSPIRE atlas (see: http://www.spatialist.be)Note de contenu : Registration quality - towards integration of laser scanning and photogrammetry

[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The automation of generalisation is an important issue at National Mapping Agencies (NMAs) to reduce data production costs and to improve data maintenance. This paper presents the challenges for automated generalisation at European NMAs integrating a qualitative and quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis focuses on the current strategies for automated generalisation at NMAs. The quantitative analysis extends these findings and measures the status of automated generalisation functionality at NMAs using the required and missing generalisation operators as indicators. The results are interesting for the research community, the software vendors and NMAs to streamline their efforts to accomplish full automation of generalisation processes. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] This paper presents the results of the EuroSDR (European Spatial Data Research) research project that studied the state-of-the-art of automated generalisation in commercial software in a collaboration between National Mapping Agencies (NMAs), research institutes and vendors. The aims of the study were to learn more about generic and specific map requirements of NMAs, to show possibilities and limitations of commercial generalisation software, and to identify areas for further developments based on latest research advances. The project consisted of three main steps: requirements analysis, testing, and evaluation. The requirement analysis (carried out from Oct 2006 till June 2007) resulted in four representative test cases, formalised and harmonised NMA map specifications for automated generalisation as well as an analysis of the defined specifications that shows the similarities and differences between map specifications of different NMAs. The four NMAs who provided the test data are: Ordnance Survey Great Britain (OSGB), Institut Géographique National, France (IGNf), The Netherlands’ Kadaster (Kadaster) and Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya (ICC). The testing was performed from June 2007 to Spring 2008 by project team members (from NMAs and research institutes) on out-of-the-box versions of four generalisation systems: ArcGIS (ESRI), Change/Push/Typify (University of Hanover), Radius Clarity (1Spatial) and axpand (Axes Systems). At the same time the vendors (except Axes systems) carried out tests with the same test cases with possibly improved and/or customised versions of their systems. The tests resulted in 35 outputs consisting of 700 thematic layers, where it should be noted that the effort to execute one test was approximately 1 week. Several example outputs with an extract of the same test case are shown in Figure 1. The evaluation, carried out from summer 2008 to spring 2009, consisted of an evaluation of meta aspects (based on information recorded by the testers) and of an evaluation of the generalised outputs themselves. The latter evaluation consisted of three parts that complemented each other: a) automated constraint-based evaluation, b) evaluation which visually compared different outputs for one test case and c) a qualitative evaluation of outputs by cartographic experts.
