[Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (auteur) Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a widely used technology in the mapping of environment and forests. Data acquisition costs and the accuracy of the forest inventory are closely dependent on some extrinsic parameters of the ALS survey. These parameters have been assessed in numerous studies about a decade ago, but since then ALS devices have developed and it is possible that previous findings do not hold true with newer technology. That is why, the effect of flying altitudes (2000, 2500 or 3000 m), scanning angles (±15° and ±20° off nadir) and scanning modes (single- and multiple pulses in air) with the area-based approach using a Leica ALS70HA-laser scanner was studied here. The study was conducted in a managed pine-dominated forest area in Finland, where eight separate discrete-return ALS data were acquired. The comparison of datasets was based on the bootstrap approach with 5-fold cross validation. Results indicated that the narrower scanning angle (±15° i.e. 30°) led to slightly more accurate estimates of plot volume (RMSE%: 21–24 vs. 22.5–25) and mean height (RMSE%: 8.5–11 vs. 9–12). We also tested the use case where the models are constructed using one data and then applied to other data gathered with different parameters. The most accurate models were identified using the bootstrap approach and applied to different datasets with and without refitting. The bias increased without refitting the models (bias%: volume 0 ± 10, mean height 0 ± 3), but in most cases the results did not differ much in terms of RMSE%. This confirms previous observations that models should only be used for datasets collected under similar data acquisition conditions. We also calculated the proportions of echoes as a function of height for different echo categories. This indicated that the accuracy of the inventory is affected more by the height distribution than the proportions of echo categories. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) In this study, two forest sites located in Finland were compared by means of predictions of Gini coefficient (GC) obtained from airborne laser scanning (ALS). We discuss the potential of the proposed method for identifying differences in structural complexity in relation with the management history of forests. The first study site (2200 ha), the Koli National Park (NP), includes areas where human intervention was restricted after 1907, in addition to forests which were protected only after the 1990s. The second study site in the municipality of Kiihtelysvaara (800 ha) has been under intensive management. These are commercial forests which include areas with different types of ownership: a large estate owned by an industrial company together with smaller private properties. We observed that GC predictions may be used to evaluate the effects of management practice on forest structure. Conservation and commercial forests showed significant differences, with the old-protected area of Koli having the highest, and the most intensively managed area in Kiihtelysvaara the lowest GC values. The effect of management history was revealed, as the 1990s’ extensions of Koli NP were more similar to unprotected areas than to forests contained within the original borders of the 1907s’ state property. Yet, their conservation status for almost two decades has been sufficient for developing significant differences against the outside of the NP. In Kiihtelysvaara, we found significant differences in GC according to the type of ownership. Moreover, the ALS predictions of GC also detected differences near lakeshores, which are driven by limitations on logging governed by Finnish law. Estimating this indicator with ALS remote sensing allowed to observe its spatial distribution and to detect peculiarities which would otherwise be unavailable from field plot sampling. Consequently, the method presented appears to be well suited for monitoring the effects of management practice, as well as verifying its compliance with legal restrictions. A new method was proposed in this study to improve the estimation of stem volume and timber assortments, by means of combining the Area-based approach (ABA) and individual tree detection (ITD), the two main approaches to deriving forest attributes from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Two methods, replacement, and histogram matching were employed to calibrate ABA-derived diameter distributions with ITD-derived diameter estimates at plot level. The results showed that more accurate estimates were obtained when calibrations were applied. In view of the highest accuracy between ABA and ITD, calibrated diameter distributions decreased its relative RMSE of the estimated entire growing stock, saw log and pulpwood fractions by 2.81%, 3.05% and 7.73% points at best, respectively. Calibration improved pulpwood fraction significantly, which contributed to the negligible bias of the estimated entire growing stock. [Termes IGN] modélisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we consider a computational method for detecting trees on the basis of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. In the approach, locations, heights, and crown shapes of trees are tracked automatically by fitting multiple 3-D crown height models to ALS data of a field plot. The estimates are computed with an iterative reconstruction method based on Bayesian inversion paradigm. The formulation allows for utilizing prior information on tree shapes in the estimation. Here, the prior models are written based on field measurement data and allometric models for tree shapes. The feasibility of the approach is tested with ALS and field data from a managed boreal forest. The algorithm found 70.2% of the trees in the area, which is a clear improvement compared to a usual 2.5D crown delineation approach (53.1% of the trees detected). In Finland, both basic approaches, single tree detection and area based modeling have been widely examined. In the following the results of the ALS based forest inventory experiments and further possibilities in Finland are reviewed and discussed. A short review of Finnish forestry in relation to possibilities of ALS based forest invent ories is included as well. Finally, some examples concerning the comparison of single tree detection and area based modeling and the usability of spatial information provided by ALS data are presented.
