The general trends in zoom levels distribution across scale and the original patterns in transitions between LoAs are especially highlighted. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationMots-clés libres : automated cartography route maps symbol placement constraint formulation constraint optimization problem simulated annealing Résumé : (auteur) This paper tackles the representation of routes carried by a physical network infrastructure on a map. In particular, the paper examines the case where each route is represented by a separate colored linear symbol offset from the physical network segments and from other routes—as on public transit maps with bus routes offset from roads. In this study, the objective is to automate the placement of such route symbols while maximizing their legibility, especially at junctions. The problem is modeled as a constraint optimization problem. Legibility criteria are identified and formalized as constraints to optimize, while focusing on the case of hiking routes in a physical network composed of roads and pedestrian paths. Two solving methods are tested, based on backtracking and simulated annealing meta-heuristics respectively. Encouraging results obtained on real data are presented and discussed. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] Mapping applications, i.e. websites where a multi-scale navigation in topographic maps is available, may be used for wayfinding purpose for instance. Such mapping applications display multi-scale maps, i.e. set of maps at different scale. However, the displayed representations can present large differences. To recognize the different representations of the same real world entity across scales, users sometimes have to make a quite important cognitive effort. We make the assumption that adding intermediate representations may be one way to reduce the gaps between the existing levels and thus to ease the user navigation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] For planning some trip or localising an area of interest, people can use mapping applications such as Google Maps, OpenStreetMap or the governmental Geoportals. These tasks involve navigating through data by panning, zooming in a scale range or switching between different types of geographic information (topographical map, satellite imagery, thematic data, etc.). It uses a large set of data, from various sources and with different representations or resolutions. A mapping application displays a multi-scale map (or pyramid), where each scale (or level) represents a specific level of detail. These levels can present large differences in terms of content and representation (Figure 1), owed to the data heterogeneity, the generalization processes or the symbolization choices. These gaps may disturb or even lose the user while zooming in and out, making sometimes the map navigation cognitively difficult.
