[Termes IGN] photo-interprétation assistée par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) was launched in January 2006, and this made it possible for the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) to acquire high-resolution images (2,5 m) from the satellite's sensor PRISM (Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping). It is expected that PRISM will be applied to the mapping and revision of 1:25 000-scale topographic maps. In collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), GSI has finished verifying and demonstrating the feasability of PRISM images for mapping and revision of 1:25 000-scale topographic maps, and has started using the images in its mapping program. This report describes this feasability study and details the actual applications of PRISM images for topographic mapping. [Termes IGN] résonanceRésumé : (Auteur) Following an earlier recognition of degraded monthly geopotential recovery from GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) due to prolonged passage through a short repeat (low order resonant) orbit, we extend these insights also to CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GOCE (Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer). We show wide track-density variations over time for these orbits in both latitude and longitude, and estimate that geopotential recovery will be as widely affected as well within all these regimes, with lesser track density leading to poorer recoveries. We then use recent models of atmospheric density to estimate the future orbit of GRACE and warn of degraded performance as other low order resonances are encountered in GRACE’s free fall. Finally implications for the GOCE orbit are discussed. [Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) Elimination of displacement due to map editing inherent in road centerline data of the New Topographic map Information System (NTIS) is implemented. Panchromatic satellite images from ALOS/PRISM are used in the process. Histogram analysis of gray value profiles parallel to the roads is employed. The true-position candidate is selected by supervised classification of histograms using support vector machine (SVM) method. According to the experiments with the Japanese NTIS road centerline database, the proposed method reverses the displacement of approximately 50 % of the road features, while a further 20% of the road features are validated as already located at the true position. The proposed method is proved to be useful for German Amtliches Topographisch-Kartographisches InformationsSystem (ATKIS) road database. This indicates wider applicability of this method to various geographic regions. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) A ground-based GPS network has been established over West Africa in the framework of African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) in tight cooperation between French and African institutes. The experimental setup is described and preliminary highlights are given for different applications using these data. Precipitable water vapor (PWV) estimates from GPS are used for evaluating numerical weather prediction (NWP) models and radiosonde humidity data. Systematic tendency errors in model forecasts are evidenced. Correlated biases in NWP model analyses and radiosonde data are evidenced also, which emphasize the importance of radiosonde humidity data in this region. PWV and precipitation are tightly correlated at seasonal and intraseasonal timescales. Almost no precipitation occurs when PWV is smaller than 30 kg m−2. This limit in PWV also coincides well with the location of the intertropical discontinuity. Five distinct phases in the monsoon season are determined from the GPS PWV, which correspond either to transition or stationary periods of the West African Monsoon system. They may serve as a basis for characterizing interannual variability. Significant oscillations in PWV are observed with 10- to 15-day and 15- to 20-day periods, which suggest a strong impact of atmospheric circulation on moisture and precipitation. The presence of a diurnal cycle oscillation in PWV with marked seasonal evolutions is found. This oscillation involves namely different phasing of moisture fluxes in different layers implying the low-level jet, the return flow, and the African Easterly Jet. The broad range of timescales observed with the GPS systems shows a high potential for investigating many atmospheric processes of the West African Monsoon. [Termes IGN] simulation spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a new method to discover transition rules of geographical cellular automata (CA) based on a bottom-up approach, ant colony optimization (ACO). CA are capable of simulating the evolution of complex geographical phenomena. The core of a CA model is how to define transition rules so that realistic patterns can be simulated using empirical data. Transition rules are often defined by using mathematical equations, which do not provide easily understandable explicit forms. Furthermore, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to specify equation-based transition rules for reflecting complex geographical processes. This paper presents a method of using ant intelligence to discover explicit transition rules of urban CA to overcome these limitations. This 'bottom-up' ACO approach for achieving complex task through cooperation and interaction of ants is effective for capturing complex relationships between spatial variables and urban dynamics. A discretization technique is proposed to deal with continuous spatial variables for discovering transition rules hidden in large datasets. The ACO-CA model has been used to simulate rural-urban land conversions in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Preliminary results suggest that this ACO-CA method can have a better performance than the decision-tree CA method.
