[Termes IGN] Multi-Angle Imaging SpectroradiometerRésumé : (Auteur) One important objective of the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) is retrieving global aerosol loading and microphysical properties. Accuracy depends on many factors, including the availability of a complete catalogue of particle types with their associated size distributions, shapes, single-scattering albedos, vertical profiles, and spectral radiative characteristics. Co-equal to this need is the availability of a well-designed, well-characterized instrument, with a calibration that is maintained post-launch. This allows accurate radiance and retrieval products to be made, adjusting for instrument changes. MISR performance has been intensively studied throughout the design, pre-flight, and post-launch mission phases. To establish the absolute radiometric scale, annual vicarious calibration (VC) exercises have been conducted. In addition, an on-board-calibrator (OBC) allows more frequent testing of camera degradations. Together, the VC and OBC processes have allowed MISR to achieve an absolute calibration uncertainty of 4% or better (1? confidence level) for bright land targets. Additional fine-tunings have been made following analysis of lunar-view campaign data, and from a statistical analysis of Earth observations. These studies led to slight camera-to-camera adjustments, which are important in improving the aerosol retrieval process. Validation of the response at the lower end of the dynamic range has also been accomplished using a dark-water study. With these studies complete, MISR calibration is now in an operational mode, and data users can be assured the resulting data products are stable with time. Such records meet the needs of a program designed to support climate change and provide long-term monitoring of the Earth's atmosphere and radiative fluxes. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Most multiple-flow-direction algorithms (MFDs) use a flow-partition coefficient (exponent) to determine the fractions draining to all downslope neighbours. The commonly used MFD often employs a fixed exponent over an entire watershed. The fixed coefficient strategy cannot effectively model the impact of local terrain conditions on the dispersion of local flow. This paper addresses this problem based on the idea that dispersion of local flow varies over space due to the spatial variation of local terrain conditions. Thus, the flow-partition exponent of an MFD should also vary over space. We present an adaptive approach for determining the flow-partition exponent based on local topographic attribute which controls local flow partitioning. In our approach, the influence of local terrain on flow partition is modelled by a flow-partition function which is based on local maximum downslope gradient (we refer to this approach as MFD based on maximum downslope gradient, MFD-md for short). With this new approach, a steep terrain which induces a convergent flow condition can be modelled using a large value for the flow-partition exponent. Similarly, a gentle terrain can be modelled using a small value for the flow-partition exponent. MFD-md is quantitatively evaluated using four types of mathematical surfaces and their theoretical 'true' value of Specific Catchment Area (SCA). The Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) shows that the error of SCA computed by MFD-md is lower than that of SCA computed by the widely used SFD and MFD algorithms. Application of the new approach using a real DEM of a watershed in Northeast China shows that the flow accumulation computed by MFD-md is better adapted to terrain conditions based on visual judgement. [Termes IGN] système de référence géodésiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Geographical Survey Institute published a new geodetic datum (the Japanese Geodetic Datum 2000, JGD2000) in April 2002. The JGD2000 is a static geocentric datum compliant with the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 1994 at the first epoch, January 1997, in which coordinates of control points are unchanged with time. Therefore, in order to keep the datum from becoming distorted, relative coordinate changes of markers due to crustal deformations caused by earthquakes and the steady plate motion must be corrected. So far, the changes induced by earthquakes have been revised with surface displacements detected by actual GPS observations. However, a large earthquake that occurs in a plate boundary such as the 2003 Tokachi-Oki event (M8.0) will cause deformation covering several hundred square kilometers, and resurveying all the relevant control points would be prohibitively expensive. On the other hand, the strain accumulation caused by the steady plate motion has been neglected since public projects have focused on local surveys using small networks (baselines 30-100 km). To cope with these two assignments, we develop crustal movement models to obtain coordinate corrections. With these models, we show that (1) an interpolation of observed displacements effectively reproduces co-seismic deformations without dense measurements and (2) the same method is valid for correcting the inter-seismic strain accumulation. For the latter, we show the validity of semi-dynamic datum correction already adopted in New Zealand. Combining these methods with the advanced GPS network enables us to efficiently and effectively maintain the JGD2000 for modern surveys. Indices of urban segregation are useful instruments for understanding the problem as well as for setting up public policies. The usefulness of spatial segregation indices depends on their ability to account for the spatial arrangement of population and to show how segregation varies across the city. This paper proposes global spatial indices of segregation that capture interaction among population groups at different scales. We also decompose the global indices to obtain local spatial indices of segregation, which enable visualization and exploration of segregation patterns. We propose the use of statistical tests to determine the significance of the indices. The proposed indices are illustrated using an artificial dataset and a case study of socio-economic segregation in São José dos Campos (SP, Brazil).
