[Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus instrument has two selectable gains for each spectral band. In the acquisition plan, the gains were initially set to maximize the entropy in each scene. One unintended consequence of this strategy was that, at times, dense vegetation saturated band 4 and deserts saturated all bands. A revised strategy, based on a land-cover classification and sun angle thresholds, reduced saturation, but resulted in gain changes occurring within the same scene on multiple overpasses. As the gain changes cause some loss of data and difficulties for some ground processing systems, a procedure was devised to shift the gain changes to the nearest predicted cloudy scenes. The results are still not totally satisfactory as gain changes still impact some scenes and saturation still occurs, particularly in ephemerally snow-covered regions. A primary conclusion of our experience with variable gain on Landsat-7 is that such an approach should not be employed on future global monitoring missions. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the influence that certain omission and commission errors can have on the gravity field models estimated from the initial release of data (RL01) from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission. The effects of omission errors were analyzed by limiting the degree and order to which the GPS and K-band range-rate (KBR) measurement partials were extended in the solution process. The commission error studies focused on the impact of an imperfect mean reference gravity field model on the solution. Combinations of both of these error sources were also explored. The nature of these errors makes them difficult to distinguish from the true gravity signal, so the exploration of these error sources was performed using simulations; however, comparisons to real-data solutions are provided. The results show how each of the specific error sources investigated influences the gravity field solution. The simulations also show how all of the errors examined can be sufficiently mitigated through the appropriate choice of processing parameters. [Termes IGN] réduction géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The design of the training stage of a supervised classification should account for the properties of the classifier to be used. Consideration of the way the classifier operates may enable the training stage to be designed in a manner which ensures that the aim of the classification is satisfied with the use of a small, inexpensive, training set. It may, therefore, be possible to reduce the training set size requirements from that generally expected with the use of standard heuristics. Substantial reductions in training set size may be possible if interest is focused on a single class. This is illustrated for mapping cotton in north-western India by support vector machine type classifiers. Four approaches to reducing training set size were used: intelligent selection of the most informative training samples, selective class exclusion, acceptance of imprecise descriptions for spectrally distinct classes and the adoption of a one-class classifier. All four approaches were able to reduce the training set size required considerably below that suggested by conventional widely used heuristics without significant impact on the accuracy with which the class of interest was classified. For example, reductions in training set size of not, vert, similar 90% from that suggested by a conventional heuristic are reported with the accuracy of cotton classification remaining nearly constant at not, vert, similar 95% and not, vert, similar 97% from the user's and producer's perspectives respectively. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) The pressure of population and its demands for fuel, for heating or industrial usage, causes destruction of the natural environment. One of the clearest examples for the accelerated degradation of changes in the forest area and coastline is in the Kilyos–Karaburun coastline located in the northern part of Istanbul metropolitan city. The open-pit mining activities in the region are threatening the balances of both sea and land ecosystems, and cause degradation of forest areas and changes along the coastline. In this paper, the changes are examined with multisensor satellite data such as Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), SPOT Panchromatic (P), and RADARSAT images by using different image-processing techniques. The degrees of changes in coastline length and coastal region area were calculated, and the effectiveness of the use of different image data sets was outlined for coastal environments.
