[Termes IGN] volcanologieRésumé : (Auteur) The ability to monitor and rapidly react to remote detection of volcanic activity has been greatly improved through use of the Autonomous Sciencecraft Experiment (ASE), an advanced software application installed on a spacecraft in Earth orbit. ASE is a NASA New Millennium Program experiment demonstrating science-driven autonomous command and control of a spacecraft. Flying on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) spacecraft, ASE successfully detected thermal emission from the Mt. Erebus lava lake on 7 May 2004, having analyzed a Hyperion hyperspectral data product on board the spacecraft. EO-1 was re-tasked by ASE to obtain a follow-up observation 7 h later and sent a notification of detection of volcanic activity to the ground. The entire process was carried out autonomously. Initial acquisition to receipt on the ground of the positive detection took less than 3 h, a process that without ASE would have taken weeks. The ASE Thermal Classifier has detected several styles of effusive volcanic activity: active lava lakes, pahoehoe flow fields, open channel flows and lava domes. ASE successfully demonstrated that science-driven spacecraft operation greatly enhances science return per returned byte through the identification of the most valuable data, allowing prioritization of downlink products and the discarding of null data sets. This technology has applications on missions elsewhere in the solar system. Modified thermal classifiers can be used for detecting and monitoring active volcanism on the jovian satellite lo, the neptunian moon Triton, and searching for active volcanism on Mars and icy satellites. The success of ASE is an incentive for future instrument and mission designers to consider on-board data-processing requirements (especially data storage capacity, number of processors and processor speed, and RAM) in order to take advantage of this flight-proven technology. This paper mainly deals with the integration of Geographical Information System (GIS) data, stereo aerial imagery and a Digital Surface Model (DSM) to extract wind erosion obstacles (namely tree rows and hedges) in open landscapes. Different approaches, such as image segmentation, edge extraction, linking, grouping and 3-dimensional verification with the DSM, are combined to extract the objects of interest. Experiments show that most wind erosion obstacles can be successfully extracted by the developed system. [Termes IGN] restauration d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Images that are collected for mapping purposes from airborne or space-borne sensors have to cover large areas by great image swaths at a high spatial resolution. These demands can be fulfilled by push-broom scanners featuring staggered line arrays, which are constructed from two identical CCD lines shifted against each other by half a pixel in line direction. Practical applications of such arrays in remote sensing include SPOT, and in the airborne environment the Airborne Digital Sensor, or ADS40, from Leica Geosystems. Furthermore, image restoration methods for enhancing the image quality can be applied to improve image quality and resolution. This paper presents an approach of high resolution image restitution from staggered lines and practical results with ADS40 high resolution panchromatic images. [Termes IGN] Vienne (capitale Autriche)Résumé : (Auteur) In this study, we use a technique referred to as Gaussian decomposition for processing and calibrating data acquired with a novel small-footprint airborne laser scanner that digitises the complete waveform of the laser pulses scattered back from the Earth's surface. This paper presents the theoretical basis for modelling the waveform as a series of Gaussian pulses. In this way the range, amplitude, and width are provided for each pulse. Using external reference targets it is also possible to calibrate the data. The calibration equation takes into account the range, the amplitude, and pulse width and provides estimates of the backscatter cross-section of each target. The applicability of this technique is demonstrated based on RIEGL LMS-Q560 data acquired over the city of Vienna. The detection of CSs in single and quad-polarized images is addressed and applied on polarimetric and interferometric high-resolution airborne SAR data at L-band. For the detection of CSs two different approaches are proposed and their individual performance is analyzed. The properties of the detected CSs and their polarimetric and interferometric characteristics are assessed. The role of polarimetry on the detection of the CSs is evaluated and the potential of extracting the orientation and dielectric properties of individual CSs is finally addressed.
