[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Photogrammetrically derived Digital Surface Models have been widely adopted in geoscientific applications such as mapping and change detection across volcanic surfaces, glaciers, areas of seismic activity, forests, river landforms etc. Resolution of the reconstructed surface is crucial as more accurate information enables more profound understanding of the phenomena. With this objective in mind, the research presented here proposes a new matching cost function that produces surfaces of enhanced resolution with respect to the gold standard: the window-based semi-global matching technique. We evaluate the algorithm on different image datasets spanning various acquisition geometries, radiometric qualities and ground sample distance sizes. In particular , results on Earth satellites (SPOT-7, Pléiades), extraterres-trial (Chang'E3 moon landing), aerial and terrestrial acquisitions are shown. The implementation of the method is available in MicMac-the free open-source software for photogrammetry. I. INTRODUCTION Digital surface model (DSM or photogrammetric DSM) generation using dense image matching is an accepted technique across the geoscience communities. Next to other competitive techniques such as LiDAR or radar, image-based reconstruction produces denser 3D information, it is cost-effective and richer as it includes photometric observations that allow, for example, 3D change detection or classification. Photogrammetric DSMs in geoscience applications can be generated from terrestrial images, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) acquisitions or high-resolution optical satellite imaging. a) Terrestrial and UAV applications: Modelling of surface roughness parameters [1]; mapping volcanic surfaces [2]; and measuring glaciers' microrelief progression [3] are some of many examples of terrestrial applications carried out with consumer grade cameras and little expert knowledge. UAV-based surveys are increasingly presented as an alternative to terrestrial surveys due to their larger reach, their ease of deployment and reduced operational cost. With respect to resolution, UAV surveys are a compromise between high-resolution close-range and moderate-resolution satellite imaging. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) With the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS), the accurate camera positions at exposure can be known and the GNSS-assisted bundle block adjustment (BBA) approach is possible for integrated sensor orientation (ISO). This study employed ISO approach for camera pose determination with the objective of investigating the impact of a good sensor pre-calibration on a poor acquisition geometry. Within the presented works, several flights were conducted on a dike by a small UAV embedded with a metric camera and a GNSS receiver. The multi-lever-arm estimation within the BBA procedure makes it possible to merge image blocks of different configurations such as nadir and oblique images without physical constraints on camera and GNSS antenna positions. The merged image block achieves a better accuracy and the sensor self-calibrated well. The issued sensor calibration is then applied to a less preferable acquisition configuration and the accuracy is significantly improved. For a corridor acquisition scene of about 600 m , a centimetric accuracy is reached with one GCP. With the provided sensor pre-calibration, an accuracy of 3.9 cm is achieved without any GCP. Certain applications, e.g., very accurate shape reconstruction in industrial metrology or change detection for deformation studies in geosciences, require results of enhanced accuracy. The tie-point extraction step is the opening in the photogrammetric processing chain and therefore plays a key role in the quality of the subsequent image orientation, camera calibration and 3D reconstruction. Improving its precision will have an impact on the obtained 3D. In this research work we describe a method which aims at enhancing the accuracy of image orientation by adding a second iteration photogrammetric processing. The result from the classical processing is used as a priori information to guide the extraction of refined tie-points of better photogrammetric quality. Evaluated on indoor and UAV acquisitions, the proposed methodology shows a significant improvement on the obtained 3D point accuracy. [Termes IGN] TunisieRésumé : (auteur) Monitoring agricultural areas threatened by soil erosion often requires decimetre topographic information over areas of several square kilometres. Airborne lidar and remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) imagery have the ability to provide repeated decimetre-resolution and -accuracy digital elevation models (DEMs) covering these extents, which is unrealistic with ground surveys. However, various factors hamper the dissemination of these technologies in a wide range of situations, including local regulations for RPAS and the cost for airborne laser systems and medium-format RPAS imagery. The goal of this study is to investigate the ability of low-tech kite aerial photography to obtain DEMs with decimetre resolution and accuracy that permit 3-D descriptions of active gullying in cultivated areas of several square kilometres. To this end, we developed and assessed a two-step workflow. First, we used both heuristic experimental approaches in field and numerical simulations to determine the conditions that make a photogrammetric flight possible and effective over several square kilometres with a kite and a consumer-grade camera. Second, we mapped and characterised the entire gully system of a test catchment in 3-D. We showed numerically and experimentally that using a thin and light line for the kite is key for a complete 3-D coverage over several square kilometres. We thus obtained a decimetre-resolution DEM covering 3.18 km2 with a mean error and standard deviation of the error of +7 and 22 cm respectively, hence achieving decimetre accuracy. With this data set, we showed that high-resolution topographic data permit both the detection and characterisation of an entire gully system with a high level of detail and an overall accuracy of 74 % compared to an independent field survey. Kite aerial photography with simple but appropriate equipment is hence an alternative tool that has been proven to be valuable for surveying gullies with sub-metric details in a square-kilometre-scale catchment. This case study suggests that access to high-resolution topographic data on these scales can be given to the community, which may help facilitate a better understanding of gullying processes within a broader spectrum of conditions. [Termes IGN] programmation dynamiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This work addresses the generation of high quality digital surface models by fusing multiple depths maps calculated with the dense image matching method. The algorithm is adapted to very high resolution multi-view satellite images, and the main contributions of this work are in the multi-view fusion. The algorithm is insensitive to outliers, takes into account the matching quality indicators, handles non-correlated zones (e.g. occlusions), and is solved with a multi-directional dynamic programming approach. No geometric constraints (e.g. surface planarity) or auxiliary data in form of ground control points are required for its operation. Prior to the fusion procedures, the RPC geolocation parameters of all images are improved in a bundle block adjustment routine. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated on two VHR (Very High Resolution)-satellite image datasets (Pléiades, WorldView-3) revealing its good performance in reconstructing non-textured areas, repetitive patterns, and surface discontinuities.
