[Termes IGN] interface graphiqueRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] Our work tackles user map design on the web. Lately the explosion of cartographic tools on the web allows anyone to become a mapmaker. Nevertheless the problem of quality of those maps has to be raised. Besides many cartographic websites do not offer as many personalisation functionalities as they could. On-demand map design has to be improved: users should be granted with the possibility to specify how a map is created to best fit their needs, which requires adapting to user taste and context while respecting cartographic rules. [Termes IGN] XMLRésumé : (auteur) This paper aims at enhancing the usability of web services that perform complex processes on geographical data, like data integration or generalisation. These services usually have several requirements about the structure of data they can process. Enhancing the usability of such services for external users who are not familiar with the underlying software and algorithms and who use the service on their own data is a challenging task. It implies giving users enough information for them to correctly build their query message, which often necessitates pre-processing their data. Not all structure requirements are expressed through XML type definition in the service interface. Formalisms exist to enrich this description but they are quite complex both for the service provider to create the service metadata and for the user to understand the metadata. This paper presents our proposal to assist users who want to invoke a data processing service on their own data. One component of our proposal is a ‘requirements publishing application’ which assists service providers in publishing a generic pre-processing activity that is dedicated to their service. This pre-processing activity will be interpreted afterwards by the other component of our proposal, the generic pre-processing service, to pre-process user data. [Termes IGN] interface graphiqueRésumé : (auteur) [introduction] Processing geographical data based on modular software components developed by different authors is getting more and more generalised with web services and interoperable java libraries. For instance, MapShaper and WebGen are generalisation Web services meant to be invocated by human users on their data thanks to clients hiding the complexity of network communication. Geotools and Geoxygene are java libraries, that can be downloaded on the Web, and which propose a wide range of functionality related to geographical data processing. These are interoperable because they implement ISO/OGC concepts like FT_Feature or GM_Point, and, in the future, because they will implement the GeoAPI (a set of standard java interface definitions corresponding to these conceptual models). This paper presents a work in progress to provide a lightweight web interface for a user to locate software components that process geographical data, to explore them and eventually test them on his data. The immediate purpose of this application is to facilitate the design of user applications based on such resources. A user may want to select a best implementation of an abstract service before deciding to use a web service or to use the programmatic interface of a java interoperable library that has not yet been deployed as a web service. The expression ‘abstract service’ is used here to refer to ‘an abstract resource that represents a capability of performing tasks that represents a coherent function. [Termes IGN] sémiologie graphiqueRésumé : (auteur) This paper addresses the issue of designing efficient on-demand maps in services oriented architectures. Some crucial steps of an on-demand map design process are not supported by today's architectures and may greatly benefit from knowledge that has been formalised by cartographers, like the definition of styles to draw geographical data on the map. Our proposal aims at integrating part of cartographic expertness, mostly semiologic rules, in Web mapping services oriented architectures. It comprises a set of Web services dedicated to facilitating the definition of accurate legends with respect to user objectives and data.
