[Termes IGN] verticaleRésumé : (auteur) Monitoring vertical land motion at tide gauges is mandatory if absolute or climate related signals in mean sea level are to be derived from coastal tide gauge records. Different glacial isostatic adjustment models provide very different predictions at the required level of a few tenth of millimetres per year accuracy, while other processes that may affect the vertical stability of tide gauges are still more difficult to predict. An alternative approach is to measure the rates of vertical land motions at the tide gauges. Continuous GPS recordings are presently the most practical and accurate technical solution to address such an issue. The most adequate way to handle the GPS processing seems to be a global scale approach in consistency with the size of the issues: geocentric reference frame realization, long-term stability, global climate change. The laboratories CLDG (Centre Littoral De Géophysique) and LAREG (Laboratoire de Recherches en Géodésie) contribute to the Tide Gauge Benchmark Monitoring (TIGA) IGS pilot project since October 2002 by routinely processing a global set of about 140 GPS sites within the ULR analysis centre consortium. The set comprises about 122 TG-CGPS stations that are analysed using a free network approach. Time series of more than six years are now available. The accuracy of the vertical component is very sensitive to the reference frame definition and realization. We therefore performed some tests in order to quantify the impact of various analysis options on the stability of our realization. We compared the stability of our global solutions with respect to ITRF2000 solution and to its IGS realization called IGS00, while changing the number of reference stations and their geometry. The results indicate that the more reference stations are used the better the alignment to ITRF is performed. A large global distribution of the reference frame stations seems to mitigate individual station problems. The reference frame implementation is achieved within several millimetres accuracy on a weekly basis. The tests indicate that the choice of IGS00 or ITRF2000 datum was not a relevant issue to perform the alignment to ITRF at this level of accuracy. [Termes IGN] précision du positionnementRésumé : (auteur) One of the main objectives of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) is to provide a standard global reference frame having the most attainable accuracy of its datum definition in terms of its origin, scale and the time evolution of its orientation. This latter should satisfy, by convention, the no net rotation condition. The accuracy of the ITRF datum specifications are obviously dependent on the quality and the internal consistency of the solutions contributing to its elaboration and definition. In this paper, we examine and review the quality of the current ITRF datum definition with an accuracy assessment based on the ITRF2005 results and by consistency evaluation with respect to ITRF2000. The availability of time series of station positions and Earth Orientation Parameters, used now as input for the current ITRF construction, will facilitate the accuracy assessment. When rigorously stacking the time series of a given technique to estimate a long-term frame solution, the 7 transformation parameters of each individual temporal set of station positions are also estimated. By applying dynamically internal constraints (equivalent to minimum constraints approach) over the time series of the 7 parameters, we then preserve some physical “natural” parameters as for instance the scale and the origin from VLBI and SLR, respectively. Our conservative evaluation of the estimated accuracy of the ITRF datum definition is that the origin and its rate are accurate at the level of 5 mm and 2 mm/yr, the scale and its rate are at the level of 1 part per billion (ppb) and 0.1 ppb/yr and the No-Net-Rotation condition implementation is at the level of 2 mm/yr. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Prior studies of the power spectra of GPS position time series have found pervasive seasonal signals against a power-law background of flicker noise plus white noise. Dong et al. (2002) estimated that less than half the observed GPS seasonal power can be explained by redistributions of geophysical fluid mass loads. Much of the residual variation is probably caused by unidentified GPS technique errors and analysis artifacts. Among possible mechanisms, Penna and Stewart (2003) have shown how unmodeled analysis errors at tidal frequencies (near 12- and 24-hour periods) can be aliased to longer periods very efficiently. Signals near fortnightly, semiannual, and annual periods are expected to be most seriously affected. We have examined spectra for the 167 sites of the International GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) Service (IGS) network having more than 200 weekly measurements during 1996.0–2006.0. The non-linear residuals of the weekly IGS solutions that were included in ITRF2005, the latest version of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), have been used. To improve the detection of common-mode signals, the normalized spectra of all sites have been stacked, then boxcar smoothed for each local north (N), east (E), and height (H) component. The stacked, smoothed spectra are very similar for all three components. Peaks are evident at harmonics of about 1 cycle per year (cpy) up to at least 6 cpy, but the peaks are not all at strictly 1.0 cpy intervals. Based on the 6th harmonic of the N spectrum, which is among the sharpest and largest, and assuming a linear overtone model, then a common fundamental of 1.040 ± 0.008 cpy can explain all peaks well, together with the expected annual and semiannual signals. A flicker noise power-law continuum describes the background spectrum down to periods of a few months, after which the residuals become whiter. Similar sub-seasonal tones are not apparent in the residuals of available satellite laser ranging (SLR) and very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) sites, which are both an order of magnitude less numerous and dominated by white noise. There is weak evidence for a few isolated peaks near 1 cpy harmonics in the spectra of geophysical loadings, but these are much noisier than for GPS positions. Alternative explanations related to the GPS technique are suggested by the close coincidence of the period of the 1.040 cpy frequency, about 351.2 days, to the “GPS year”; i.e., the interval required for the constellation to repeat its inertial orientation with respect to the sun. This could indicate that the harmonics are a type of systematic error related to the satellite orbits. Mechanisms could involve orbit modeling defects or aliasing of site-dependent positioning biases modulated by the varying satellite geometry.
