We contribute a method of extracting such details from digital large format aerial photography. The dense point clouds produced by a photogrammetric process produce major and minor plane surfaces of a roof and enter into a classification of its superstructures. In real city data with a total of 1312 superstructures the proposed automated process finds 1024, thus achieving success at a rate of 78%. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (auteur) Current Internet-inspired mapping data are in the form of street maps, orthophotos, 3D models or street-side images and serve to support mostly search and navigation. Yet the only mapping data that currently can really be searched are the street maps via their addresses and coordinates. The orthophotos, 3D models and street-side images represent predominantly “eye candy” with little added value to the Internet-user. We are interested in characterizing the elements of the urban space from imagery. In this paper, we discuss the use of street side imagery and aerial imagery to develop descriptions of urban spaces, initially of building facades and roofs. We present methods (a) to segment facades using high-overlap street side facade images, (b) to map facades and facade details from vertical aerial images, and (c) to characterize roofs by their type and details, also from aerial photography. This paper describes a method of roof segmentation with the goal of assigning each roof to a specific architectural style. Questions of the use of the attic space, or the placement of solar panels, are of interest. It is of interest that roofs have recently been mapped using LiDAR point clouds. We demonstrate that aerial images are a useful and economical alternative to LiDAR for the characterization of buildingroofs, and that they also contain very valuable information about facades. Additionally, many commercial and governmental initiatives have been started to develop urban 3D geographic information systems in a transition from the classical 2D- to the novel 3D-GIS. The modeling of building roofs is thus a relevant research topic. The focus has been on the use of aerial LiDAR point clouds (Light Detection And Ranging). However, recent progress in digital aerial cameras has rendered possible the acquisition of very dense point clouds from high overlap digital aerial imagery, and to use these point clouds jointly with the image information to generate 3D building models. This paper presents a multi-step processing framework and work flow for the automatic segmentation of building roofs in densely built-up areas from high-resolution vertical aerial images. Details extruding from, or intruding into, a roof are being excluded so that each roof is being modeled by means of its planar segments and can then be classified as a specific roof type from a set of standard roof shapes. Our experimental work employs a test area in Graz (Austria) with 186 buildings. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Novel automated photogrammetry is based on four innovations. First is the cost-free increase of overlap between images when sensing digitally. Second is an improved radiometry. Third is multi-view matching. Fourth is the Graphics Processing Unit (gpu), making complex algorithms for image matching very practical. These innovations lead to improved automation of the photogrammetric workflow so that point clouds are created at sub-pixel accuracy, at very dense intervals, and in near real-time, thereby eroding the unique selling proposition of lidar scanners. Two test projects compare point clouds from aerial and street-side lidar systems with those created from images. We show that the photogrammetric accuracy compares well with the lidar-method, yet the density of surface points is much higher from images, and the throughput is commensurate with a fully automated all-digital approach. Beyond this density, we identify 15 additional advantages of the photogrammetric approach.
